Italy: lesbian couple threatened

14 January 2022

Outraged because two young girls publicly were affectionate on the bus, a seventy-year-old threatened them with a knife and repeatedly insulted them by shouting “ugly lesbians, either stop it or I’ll put a knife in your belly”.

The serious instance of homophobia occured the other evening on the Amt bus number 13 from Corso Saffi to the terminus of via Turati, in Caricamento. At this point, thanks to both to passengers reporting the situation to the Police emergency number, to the Amt operations center, the woman was intercepted by a police car patrol.

The seventy-year-old, who already possessed a small criminal record, was reported on foot, but got away with a simple report for threats aggravated by the use of the knife (which was later found in the hands of an acquaintance, who was reported for aiding and abetting).

ROME, NOV 9 – A 20-year-old Tunisian-Italian woman was attacked by her father after telling her parents she was gay in the Marche seaside resort of Pesaro on Saturday, Il Resto del Carlino newspaper reported Tuesday.

The woman told her 53-year-old Tunsiain father and 58-year-old Italian mother she was a lesbian and was going out with a woman, the north-central Italian daily said.

When she was getting into her girlfriend’s car outside her workplace on Saturday afternoon, her father set on her, pulled her back by the hair and slapped her twice, the paper said, while her mother insulted her.

The woman was helped by a nearby hotel clerk who took her into the building and threatened to call the police if her parents tried to come after her.

Local police have opened a probe into mistreatment in the family. (ANSA).

Italy: man attacks lesbian couple

As reported by Il Mattino, during the night of 24-25 August, a 40-year-old man attacked and beat a lesbian couple, originally from Nocera Inferiore and living together in Castel San Giorgio. … The reason for the blind aggression? Pure and simple homophobia. The man brutally beat them solely because they are lesbians. The Nocera Inferiore Attourney and the deputy prosecutor Angelo Rubano are certain of this. The 40-year-old, already known to the police, went to the home of the two women, convinced them to go outside and attacked them, kicking and punching them.

UN submission on discrimination and violence against lesbians

On 1 August 2021 Listening2Lesbians provided submissions in response to the following from the Commission on the Status of Women:

“Any individual, non-governmental organization, group or network may submit communications (complaints/appeals/petitions) to the Commission on the Status of Women containing information relating to alleged violations of human rights that affect the status of women in any country in the world. The Commission on the Status of Women considers such communications as part of its annual programme of work in order to identify emerging trends and patterns of injustice and discriminatory practices against women for purposes of policy formulation and development of strategies for the promotion of gender equality.”

Commission on the Status of Women: Communication Procedure

Information was provided to the UN on incidents dating back approximately 2.5 years across the 57 countries we have reported on in that time.

Legal, social and familial punishment of lesbians for failing to conform with the expectations imposed on women illuminates the status of women around the world. Homosexuality is understood to be a breach of sex-based expectations. Strictly enforced sex roles are accompanied by increased consequences for those who break them, individually or collectively. Lesbians, or women read as lesbians, are doubly punishable for their non-conformity, both overt and inferred.

Listening2Lesbians is not an expert on these countries and provided this information to augment and support the information provided by women from individual communities. We can only provide information on cases we have been able to locate and based our submissions solely around the available facts. Please note that we welcome corrections and updates.

We are painfully aware of the many communities not represented.

Anyone with information on missing communities is invited to contact us with information on reporting violence and discrimination against lesbians in their community.

Italy: young lesbian targeted in knife attack

Insulted and beaten bloody for looking too much at the attackers’ girlfriends. The subject of the latest homophobic violence was a young woman who was with her partner last Friday in the Roman Gay Street, which is the main road of San Giovanni which connects the Basilica to the Colosseum. She was there to spend a few hours quietly, having a relaxed drink and a chat with her girlfriend. She could not imagine the turn that the evening would take. It was an ending, unfortunately, which is similar to the many others that have been increasing in number recently throughout Italy, from north to south, in a series of offenses and attacks against the LGBTQ community.

After the attacks in the Neapolitan area, in Milan, and in Tuscany, this most recent one happened in the heart of the capital a few days ago. This incident was reported by the actor Pietro Turano, activist and vice president of the Roman chapter of Arcigay. On his Facebook page he recounted the episode he partially witnessed. A young lesbian was targeted by two contemporaries who allegedly first verbally abused her and then attacked her with a small knife, wounding her in different parts of her body.

Italy: young lesbian couple attacked and threatened

In Arzano (in the metropolitan area of Naples) two young women aged 21 and 23 were allegedly first approached by a man who had seen them kissing in the car, who then verbally attacked them, slapping the younger woman.

Arcigay Napoli denounced the attack, explaining that they had received a letter from one of the two girls: “I am contacting you,” one of the two young women wrote, “because we need help. I was lucky enough to fall in love with a beautiful woman. We were in the car, in the usual alleyway below our house. An angry and hate filled man approached us, screaming at us. Despite my calm answer, while my girlfriend was starting the car to get away, the man slapped me twice, threatening to set fire to the car with us inside if we showed up again in the same place”.

Italy: lesbian couple harassed on the beach

On the seaside of Capo Miseno, in the municipality of Bacoli, Naples, two women were expelled from the beach because they were lesbians. The radio host Gianni Simioli denounced what happened .

Francesca and Martina were literally attacked by an elderly gentleman, annoyed by their presence, which he said would ‘upset’ his niece. “Get back to the mountains, stupid!”, the man shouted clearly upset. He was flanked by his daughter in the attack on the two girls.

“A gentleman suddenly approached us and asked us to leave because our presence raised questions for his niece who was beginning to ask questions. In reality we had not engaged in obscene behavior of any kind – there was only a very chaste kiss and the child, as far as we saw, had not even looked at us and was intent on playing. The gentleman insisted that he wanted us to leave and began to rant but we refused to leave. He seemed to have given up when he returned, this time accompanied by his daughter. He began to attack us and some of the boys who were defending us. The old man hit a guy with the pole of an umbrella while the woman slapped my arm after throwing several accusations at me, blaming me for things I had npt done. For example, she constantly referred to my nudity but I was wearing a bikini, just like her. We felt deeply humiliated, we didn’t do anything wrong. We just wanted to spend a day at the beach like any other person.“, said Francesca, who turned to the Regional Councilor of Europa Verde Francesco Emilio Borrelli to express her indignation for what happened.

Italy: man guilty of 2019 murder of lesbian Elisa Pomarelli

Massimo Sebastiani was sentenced to 20 years for the murder of Elisa Pomarelli, the young friend he strangled in August 2019 and whose body was hidden by the murderer in the hills in the province of Piacenza. The prosecutor had asked for 24 years for Sebastiani, who was arrested after a few days on the run hidden in the hills, before being accused of murder and concealment of a corpse.

The wrath of Elisa’s family – “This is not justice, 20 years is so short. She deserved a life sentence”, said the victim’s family after dscovering the sentence. Elisa was strangled by a man she had considered a friend. Sebastiani, on the other hand, was convinced that Elisa was his girlfriend. After killing her, the 47-year-old worker sent messages to Elisa with the intention of throwing off the investigation.

Italy: driver fined for threats to lesbians

The case ended with a fine of 700 euro – the bus driver had to pay a lot (or too little) for having nsulting a lesbian couple, in Ravenna in the autumn of 2019.

The two girls, after the serious and epeated insults, had reported the 50-year-old, who, when in front of the justice of the peace, chose to apologize and compensate the victims rather than go to trial.

The homophobic insults towards the lesbian couple
As Corriere Romagna reports, the homophobic offenses against the two girls occurred at two different times. The first set of insults came in September two years ago, but it was the offense, or rather the threat, of 9 October that triggered the complaint. This is when the driver told them “I would burn you”.

Italy: Driver on trial for threats against lesbian couple

The 56-year-old driver of a private transport company will stand trial on 3 June in Ravenna for threats he allegedly made on 9 October 2019 to two lesbian girls holding hands. “I would burn you” were the words he allegedly said to the couple as they passed a stop. This threat followed insults he said to the couple at the same place the previous September.

… At the end of the month, the young women first received a phone call from a man who claimed to be the driver in question and then, from the same number, the message “Withdraw the complaint”. This message became part of the alleged series of threats for which he was in court.

Italy: Italian Moroccan lesbian threatened and made homeless by family

Born to a Moroccan father and an Italian mother, Malika did not imagine that she would find herself on the streets after coming out. She wrote to her parents, revealing that she fell in love with a girl, and coming out. This revelation made her parents angry and they forced her out of the family home without even her clothes.

The young woman reported the words of her mother. “If I see you, I’ll kill you. You are the bane of our family. I wish you a tumor, you are the shame of the family. I would rather have a ddaughter on drugs than a lesbian”, she told her daughter in anger. Once homeless, the police accompanied her to her parents’ house so that she retrieve her clothes but this did not go as planned, with her mother saying that she did not know her, on seeing her through the window.

Italy: historic sentence for soccer coach’s anti-lesbian and sexist behaviour

A historic sentence has been handed down by the Court of Appeal against the former coach of Novese who has been found guilty of stalking and making homophobic statements to his players, with a disqualificiation of 3 years. Maurizio Fossati, coach of the women’s team in the 2019/2020 season, had been referred by the Federal Prosecutor of the FIGC after reports made by some players.

Fossati, who just a year earlier had received the sports educator of the year award, had been accused of insulting the players for their physical appearance, sexual orientation and flirting with some of their locker room mates. In the motivations of sporting justice, as reported by Agi , we read that the words used by Fossati were not “merely offensive”, as established in the first instance, but “homophobic and / or sexist” in relation to the sexual orientation of his players. The original nine-month sentence had been viewed with displeasure by the federal prosecutor, who asked for an increased sentence on appeal. It has now been granted.

Ora arrivato.

Italy: lesbian hairdresser refuses to be silent on her harassment

October 2020:

“I did everything to make my salon a friendly, open, respectful place. A place where everyone and everyone could freely feel themselves, without prejudice or criticism. Today, however, it is I who cannot feel peace: they left me this sign at the entrance of the shop, as if being a “lesbian” were a reason for insult . Well, it’s not, not in my house,” she added.

“I DON’T WANT TO BE SILENCED ANYMORE”

“But this is not the first time this has happened and in the last few months I have had to suffer other “jokes” and “attacks” and so now I’m tired, I don’t want to be silent anymore. The cameras have filmed everything, I will act accordingly, but this is not the point: if with great commitment, efforts, and sacrifices I have worked to create a safe place in which to do the work I love and make all my customers feel safe regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, why would anyone think they have the right to destroy this safety out of sheer malice? The Capriccio will remain the open and true place it is, I don’t care about anyone’s threats: but it is time for the wrongdoing to result in the relevant legal consequences”.

Italy: lesbian couple attacked by neighbours

September 2020:

A 20-second video captures the assault – one woman is on the ground and her attacker kicks her in the head. She and her girlfriend are 22 and 29 years old. They have been living together for three years in one of the Atc apartments in via Adamello in Novara, a difficult neighborhood. They were attacked by two neighbours because they are lesbians. Their lawyer Maurizio Antoniazzi presented their complaint to the prosecutor’s office yesterday. “We ask that a charge of attempted murder is considered”, explains the lawyer, as the kick to the head could have killed the victim. The woman, the younger of the two, was hospitalized and then discharged with a thirty-day recovery prognosis for a broken nose and a fractured orbit.

Italy: Lesbian shares video calling for hate crime legislation following continued lesbophobic harassment

While talks of necessary Italian hate crime legislation continues, the long-awaited bill is not coming fast enough for many. Another homophobic attack occurred, this time in Genoa where Italian lesbian nurse, Camilla, shared a video of a hate crime: her car ruined by her homophobic neighbours.

Camilla, a 23 year-old nurse, recorded the video on TikTok while in tears after her neighbours vandalised her car. She asked the LGBTQ+ community for help in having her rights recognised since the government is still not forthcoming with hate crime legislation. She also shared how the police told her they can’t do much to help and she is now forced to park her car far from her house fearing of more vandalism.

In the first video posted to her TikTok, Camilla says:

“When you are a lesbian in Italy, this is how your homophobic neighbours behave: they break your car side mirror and they pierce and slash all four tires. Of course I reported this, but of course nothing will happen. To members of the LGBT community: can we do something to get some f***ing rights? Every day, I am called ‘whore’ and ‘pervert’. Now they went as far as vandalising the car I use every day to go to work.

“You tell me now, what can I do? I get up every morning, like everyone else, I go to work, I’m paying my f***ing mortgage. I’m 23 years-old, I’ve been paying it [the mortgage] for the past three years. I am not sure how many people my age do this. Can I get some help, please, since our Government is not helping me?”

In a second video, Camilla also said she received death threats. She continued, “What I want is only to live in peace, serene, and that all people can live hand in hand.”

Italy: school fined for sacking lesbian teacher

The Court of Appeal confirmed the sentence against the Sacred Heart of Trento for the dismissal of a lesbian teacher due to the “confirmed discriminationy on the basis of sexual orientation, individual and collective, and the conduct implemented by the Institute regarding the recruitment of teachers”.

The sum is almost double what the private school had been required to pay to the women in the first instance: a total of €43,000, including both financial and moral harm. The Institute has now been called upon to pay the CGIL and the association Certi Rights, which had stood up in its defense, a sum of €10,000.

In the first instance, the compensation had been assessed at €25,000 while the association and the union would have been entitled to €1,500 each.

Italy: brawl after ongoing anti lesbian harassment

L2L Italy

Another episode of homophobia, this time in Caltagirone, Sicily, where a lesbian was involved in a fight caused by a series of insults about her sexuality. Police and carabinieri intervened at the scene and spoke with the victim. At the point of reporting she had not  formally filed a complaint. According to witnesses, it seems that the brawl – without injuries – occurred between two groups of young people who were on the street in the new area of the city two nights ago. The victim was shouted at that she was male, which she has previously experienced in public and which triggered her reaction.

Arcigay: “Proud of the woman’s reaction”
Armando Caravini, president of the Catania branch of Arcigay, immediately intervened in support of the young woman. In a statement he said “I am proud of the young woman because she not only decided to put her face to this, publicly denouncing the incident and becoming an example for many who are afraid today, but for having addressed a difficult situation.”
