About Us

Listening to Lesbians is a page recording women’s experiences of being abused or silenced as lesbians and of being subjected to misogyny and lesbophobia within and outside the community.

Once I started looking at our documented experiences, I realised that we do not know the extent of the problem, except anecdotally.  Abuse and silencing are not uncommon but are practically invisible, in the absence of a way to share what happens to us except on a one-to-one basis. Acts of violence, from one off acts of aggression to sustained abuse and murder, go practically un-noted and generate little or no community outrage.

Listening to Lesbians was born to allow women to share their experiences of being attacked or silenced as lesbians, of being subjected to misogyny and lesbophobia – it was born to collate and share information on discrimination and violence against lesbians globally.

We post news stories on violence and discrimination against the lesbian community, and our unwavering response.

Recording our collective experiences, instead of only hearing them as individualised stories, allows us to name, analyse and address a problem we cannot otherwise quantify.

If you have been attacked or silenced as a lesbian, please either contact us or share your story to add your voice to this site. If we have missed critical lesbian news stories, in any language, please let us know.

If there is something you would really like to see here, please suggest it!

Who we are:

Where we are:

Listening to Lesbians is based on the land of the Whadjuk people of the Nyoongar nation. We pay our respects to their elders and community – past, present and emerging. We recognise that this land was never ceded but stolen.

Commenting and Posting:

We are happy to publish guest blogs that fit within the scope of Listening to Lesbians, either anonymously or under your name. Please email Liz with any questions about this.

We will only publish comments and posts that report or illuminate the silencing and abuse lesbians face, or that speak to these issues in some way, however contraversial.

Please do not write in and demand that we justify:

  • the behaviour of a particular lesbian
  • every element of a shared news article or opinion piece.

It is not necessary to agree with all elements of a piece for it to be an important article to share.

We do not support discrimination and/or violence against groups or individuals, so do not demand that we clarify this.

If you have any other questions about commenting and/or posting on this site, please email Liz.

Thank you in advance for respecting the intent of this site and only talking about and listening to lesbians here.

Liz and Ari
