Italy: historic sentence for soccer coach’s anti-lesbian and sexist behaviour

A historic sentence has been handed down by the Court of Appeal against the former coach of Novese who has been found guilty of stalking and making homophobic statements to his players, with a disqualificiation of 3 years. Maurizio Fossati, coach of the women’s team in the 2019/2020 season, had been referred by the Federal Prosecutor of the FIGC after reports made by some players.

Fossati, who just a year earlier had received the sports educator of the year award, had been accused of insulting the players for their physical appearance, sexual orientation and flirting with some of their locker room mates. In the motivations of sporting justice, as reported by Agi , we read that the words used by Fossati were not “merely offensive”, as established in the first instance, but “homophobic and / or sexist” in relation to the sexual orientation of his players. The original nine-month sentence had been viewed with displeasure by the federal prosecutor, who asked for an increased sentence on appeal. It has now been granted.

Ora arrivato.

Chile: lesbian couple harassed

September 2020:

A young lesbian couple in Puerto Natales is experiencing serious and constant episodes of discrimination in a situation that was denounced and repudiated by the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation (Movilh).

The couple said that for a few months they have been harassed because of their sexual orientation by strangers, with the abuse occurring outside their workplace.

They explained that on one occasion  that someone had “loosened the nut of the hydraulic fluid [in their car] – thank goodness it was not the brakes otherwise it would have perhaps been so much worse.”

Another time, the phrase “when is the threesome?” appeared on their windscreen. At that point we felt awful and we wanted to leave but we couldn’t since we need the job to pay our rent and bills,” said one of the victims.

Australia: Lesbians condemn Honey Birdette rainbow-washing ‘Pride’ campaign

HB lesbian

Honey Birdette has consistently delivered sexist and pornified representations of women to flog their overpriced lingerie and sex toys, ignoring 42 Ad Standards rulings against it for violating the code of ethics. But far from promoting equality, the company’s long history of porn-inspired depictions of lesbian sexuality further entrenches sexist and harmful stereotypes of lesbians as male entertainment, and these latest images will likely be enjoyed by men.

A number of lesbians have responded to Honey Birdette’s ad campaign, calling the company out for tokenising and fetishising lesbians to promote their brand.

“If there’s no difference between a female nipple and a male nipple why are all but one of the visible nipples female? Using lesbians as titillation is not unusual, the pornographers have been doing it for decades. But in the real world real lesbians are tortured for our activism; real lesbians are subjected to corrective rape; and in the real world when a lesbian is raped or tortured she doesn’t get to say stop. Not only are you continuing the sexualising of women, you are giving mixed messages with images of a mixed orgy.”

-Susan Hawthorne, lesbian activist and writer

“Lesbians have fought for centuries for society to understand that lesbian sexuality is not for or about men, resisting the harassment, fetishisation, corrective rape and physical attacks that lesbians here and around the world have experienced. Honey Birdette has developed a campaign that is heavily reliant on the sexualisation of lesbian bodies and the presentation of lesbian sexuality. The argument that there is no difference between male and female nipples is meaningless in a world that sexualises women so consistently.

“Calling the campaign ‘Fluid’ combined with the presentation of objectified, sexually available lesbians clearly communicates to the men watching that lesbian sexuality is fluid enough for lesbians to be sexually available to them. In a world where lesbians are harassed and attacked for our sexuality, for not being available to men, this is a dangerous game to play with lesbian lives.

“Framing opposition as conservative is to miss the point of our concerns. It is neither puritanical nor conservative to want to carve out space for lesbians to exist free of tokenism or sexual objectification in a deeply sexualised society. This campaign sells out lesbian sexuality for profit, which is not excused by the fact that Honey Birdette’s founder and her partner are the women in the shoot.

“We all want to live in a world where lesbians are safe, where lesbian lives are celebrated and where lesbian representation gives hope and strength to young lesbians working out their sexuality. Honey Birdette’s Fluid campaign takes us further away from that world.”

-Liz Waterhouse, Listening2Lesbians https://listening2lesbians.com/

Comments on Honey Birdette’s Instagram account indicate the campaign has not been well received. Commenters have questioned the company’s motives, labelling the marketing ploy as “insincere” and “disingenuous”, and accusing the company of ‘rainbow washing’, a term which refers to corporates using rainbow colours or imagery to indicate support for the LGBT community but with a minimum of effort or pragmatic result.

U.S.: lesbian files discrimination complaint against Burger King

Ingrid Burger King discrimination

A lesbian who works at a D.C. Burger King says her manager harassed her because of her sexual orientation.

Ingrid, who asked the Washington Blade not to publish her last name, filed a complaint with the D.C. Office of Human Rights last Dec. 23.

The complaint notes Ingrid, 19, began to work at the Burger King on Connecticut Avenue near the University of the District of Columbia on Aug. 24, 2019. Ingrid in her complaint states her manager “found out about my sexual orientation in September of 2019” and “began to harass me by making inappropriate comments about my protected class.”

“In January 2020, despite my numerous complaints to respondent’s upper management, the hostile work environment was not addressed, and instead I continued to be subjected to unwelcome comments about my sexual orientation from my supervisor as well as my coworkers who respondent’s manager told about my complaints,” she wrote. “Instead of addressing the situation, respondent’s district manager … cut my workdays and hours and changed my schedule, affecting my pay.”

Burger King, which is based in Miami, received a 100 percent score in the Human Rights Campaign’s 2019 Corporate Equality Index.

Burger King’s corporate office has not returned the Blade’s requests for comment. Efforts to reach the Burger King where Ingrid works via telephone were unsuccessful.

Ingrid, who continues to work at the Burger King where she said the harassment has taken place, told the Blade it is her first job. She said she filed her complaint because she doesn’t “want another LGBTQ person or someone who is not out to go through this again.”

“I don’t want someone else to get anxiety or depression because of this,” Ingrid told the Blade.

The Netherlands: lesbian couple attacked during pride

Ana Camboim Katya Sazanova

Photo: Ana Camboim

A lesbian couple was beaten  by two men on a scooter on Saturday morning in the center [of Amsterdam]. The women reported the incident to the police, but they reported that the chance of the perpetrators being caught is small.

“Oh, you are so hot, can we join you?” They walk around 5 a.m. in the Zandstraat, a narrow alley, near the Zuiderkerk after an evening out.

The couple in love walk hand in hand, which they often do in Amsterdam. Camboim gives a reply. “Get on with it, just drive on.”

Camboim gets a thump in her face and falls to the floor. Her girlfriend is also beaten in the face. The women both have bruises, a broken lip and a swollen nose.

For the couple it is a traumatic event. “It was so frightening. We only cried at home. People sometimes look up when we hold hands, but people have never been physical”, says Sazanova on the phone.

“My girlfriend is from Brazil and I from Kazakhstan. We might expect something like this in our own country but not in Amsterdam. And then it also happens during the Pride.” She states that they have been ‘lucky’. “This could have turned out so much worse.”

Germany: Lesbophobia persists even in hip Berlin

L2L Germany

Lesbians have two vulnerable characteristics: they are women and they are homosexual. They are therefore disregarded by people for two reasons. This double vulnerability is there, no matter where in Europe, in the world she moves with and belongs to the family.

The police arrive within minutes, the boys are highly motivated to grab the guy. They ask Anna in the patrol car and comb through the streets of Moabit. Unfortunately, in vain.

Afterwards, we ask ourselves: why did not the other people at the bus stop help? There are three buses and the Ringbahn at this station, there were at least 15 people. No one asked if we were okay, nobody took pictures, nobody called the police. Nothing.

The BVG wants to make the video recordings of our bus available, but then accidentally pulls out the wrong pictures. The relevant recordings will be deleted according to the privacy policy. The preliminary investigation against the unknown man is finally stopped.

The offence is assault. Nowhere is it mentioned that we are lesbian, although we have said it, although it is clear that we are the child’s parents. Nevertheless, it is not recorded that it was a homophobic offence.

Google finally changes its French algorithm for the word lesbian

SEO Lesbienne Google Victory

Before July 18, 2019, the word “Lesbian” entered on Google displayed only pornography. It was a mistake for Google, but an error now corrected. On July 18, 2019, the word “Lesbian” no longer refers to pornographic results on the French search engine, even if Safe Search is not active. The subject that seems confined to technology hides in fact enormous social consequences.

On the one hand, access to information on lesbianism on the most used search engine in France was complex. On the other hand, the results by default were part of a dangerous sexualization of women’s bodies, vector of criminal behaviour far beyond the web – the latest example to date: London lesbians who were beaten after refusing to kiss in front of a man.
(Translation)

Lesbians: victims of censorship of the giants of the web

Lesbian google search

The experience is striking. Type the word “lesbian” on Google and see how the overwhelming majority of the results are pornographic content. However, this term is only defined by the “Larousse” as “relating to female homosexuality”. “With the Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Journalists, we’ve started discussions with Google, they know there’s a problem,” journalist Alice Coffin reports. Spokesperson of the European Lesbian * Conference (EL * C), she explains having already had unpleasant surprises:”We have observed that mail filters of our recipients, including those who have Gmail, classify many e- emails from the EL * C, lambdas and newsletters, in spam … ”
