I laid on a twin bed just inches off the ground weeping, “how the fuck did I get here?” as a hurricane hot flash and the smell of cat piss abruptly awakened me. Tears, sweat and funk permeated my sheets as I looked around the cluttered room feeling like a motherless child. As I rocked and held myself, I thought “death of a beloved and sexual assault feels the same.” First comes the shock and numbness, then come the people expressing empathetic sorrow and gestures of help. The body is laid to rest, then comes the repass with all that good soul food, while folks reminisce about the departed. When the last guest leaves, the door shutting behind them sparks the realization that you are alone and everyone else is going to get on with their lives, business as usual.
Call it intuition, a hunch or hindsight, I knew nothing was going to be done. I am a black gender non-conforming lesbian. Even with a narcissistic apology email from my perpetrator (that I’m going to share for shit’s and giggles) what could a black butch lesbian expect? I was disposable, nor was I a famous “queer” woman with a powerful platform like Ellen DeGeneres or Roxane Gay, sharing their stories of sexual assault… nor was I the wife of a famous basketball player like Steph Curry, who had a man arrested after making lewd comments about sexually assaulting her.

The most recent act of homophobia in our country [Italy] last week . This time it happened in Latina and the victims are two lesbian girls , minors. From what we know, on the evening of 7 March the two girls were walking in Piazza San Marco, in the city centre, and were approached by a group of boys. Without reason, they began to direct insults at the two teens based on their sexual orientation, including “shit lesbians”. However, the [verbal] offences were not enough. One of the members of the group thought of spraying the foam used during the Carnival celebrations in the eyes of the two victims.

“Better a dead daughter than a lesbian”. It is the terrible phrase that a young woman from Palermo has heard repeatedly addressed by her parents. And it is the conception around which there is a move a long history of abuse and violence against a young man from Palermo. The girl, now a young adult, reported everything in 2016 . And a civil party against the parents was courageously established. To which the prosecutor of Termini Imerese, through the PM Annadomenica Gallucci, disputes crimes of mistreatment, sexual violence and persecutory acts. The GUP Michele Guarnotta this morning accepted the request for the constitution of a civil party presented by the girl’s lawyer, the lawyer Giuseppe Bruno. The father and mother have always denied the accusations.

A 14-year-old girl in Chile revealed her stepfather allegedly raped her. But [her] biological father who beat her saying she deserved to be raped ‘for being a lesbian’. The girl told her partner in December that her stepfather had raped her the year before. Her mother then sent her away to live with her biological father, but she was not safer there either. According to Chile’s main LGBTI organization, Movilh, her evangelical Christian father allegedly has kept the girl detained illegally. He has also stopped her from speaking to anyone and beat her with a leash. He claimed she deserved the rape and that he beat her to get the ‘bad out of her’.

A 46-year-old father was sentenced to six months’ suspended imprisonment for violence against his daughter but also for threatening police officers. The man, who lives in Saint-Etienne (Loire) had in September, broken the nose of his child, on the pretext that she was homosexual . “When your daughter hides for two years that she is a lesbian, it deserves a slap,” argued the forty-year-old.
