Overall report summary:

2019 was the most violent year for lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals and intersex people (LGBTI) in Chile with a 58% increase in cases and allegations of homophobia and transphobia, reaching 1103 abuses, the highest number reported to date, as outlined in the XVIII Annual Human Rights Report on Sexual and Gender Diversity, released today by the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation (Movilh) for the first time without a press conference in the wake of the Coronavirus.

“There were more cases, more complaints, and the abuses were more violent and savage, as is made clear by the increases in the most ruthless abuses (murders and beatings). This situation has been noticed since 2018 and is not related to the social outbreak, which only had an impact on an increase in police abuse, “said Movilh spokesman Oscar Rementería.

L2L Mexico
On March 25th, a female police officer, attached to the Ministry of Public Security and Local Transit in Tuxtla Gutierrez, who refused to hide her homosexuality, was attacked by members of the same police force. She is currently in hospital due to severe burns to her chest and arm.

The Chiapas Citizen Observatory on the Rights of the LGBTTTI Population demanded that the culprits be punished in an exemplary manner and that a thorough investigation be carried out for gender-based violence, especially for violence related to the victim’s sexual orientation. Thanks to that complaint, on March 31st, the State Attorney General’s Office arrested two people allegedly guilty of the crime.

According to the attorney general Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca, the victim known as Dulce “N” and her partner Karla “N” went to the home of the now detained Carlos Mario “N” and Jatziri Miriam “N” where the violent events took place. First Dulce “N” was pushed to the ground by Jaritzi Miriam and then Carlos Mario sprayed her body with alcohol and set fire to her with a match. When Karla “N” entered the room, she ran to her aid, but she also caught fire in the attempt to help her partner.

marielle franco

Friends and relatives of the murdered Brazilian politician Marielle Franco are demanding answers after Adriano da Nóbrega – a notorious hitman, whose gang of contract killers is suspected of involvement in her assassination – was gunned down by police in the north-east of the country.

Nóbrega, an ex-special forces police captain, also had close links to the family of the far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro. Nóbrega was killed by police on Sunday in Bahia state where he had been on the run.

Franco’s leftist PSOL party said Nóbrega was a “key piece” in discovering who ordered Franco’s killing and called for a full investigation. “Witness elimination? Another attempt at obstruction of justice? Who ordered our companion killed? We demand answers,” tweeted Sâmia Bonfim, a PSOL congresswoman.
