Australia: Pregnant lesbian told “I hope your baby dies”

L2LAustralia

A pregnant woman has been brought to tears after a stranger verbally abused her at a supermarket.

Ebony was shopping with her girlfriend Lisa at a Coles at Brookside in northern Brisbane, when a man approached her and told her he hoped her baby would die.

Lisa said she’s hesitant about Ebony returning to the supermarket on her own after the experience, the Courier-Mail reported.

‘She was just going about her day when a man she describes as being in his mid- 50s – completely unprovoked – told her ”I hope your baby dies, it’s better off without you”,’ Lisa said.

She said her girlfriend was left shocked to the point of tears, and the couple chose to leave immediately rather than responding to the man’s comments.

But the effects of the comments didn’t disappear for the couple, who say they have endured discrimination in the past for raising a child as two same-sex parents.

‘It affected us for a few days. It shook Ebony up a lot and caused unnecessary concern for the baby. I guess as an expectant mum, she was already filled with concern, so someone saying something like that plays on your worst fears,’ Lisa said.

Update: “No prosecution” for men who hurled lesbophobic verbal abuse at passenger on Ryanair

_102466793_ryanairpic

Police who investigated two women’s reports of homophobic abuse on a Ryanair flight said problems with evidence have prevented a prosecution.

Laura Muldoon tweeted a photo in June which she said was of the men who chanted abuse at her on the Stansted to Seville flight.

Ms Muldoon and another woman made a complaint to Essex Police.

Police said “evidential difficulties” prevented the “realistic prospect of a successful prosecution”.

An Essex Police spokeswoman added that officers conducted “extensive inquiries” and a man was interviewed voluntarily.

Anyone with more information was asked to call the force.

Ms Muldoon said several offensive terms had been aimed at her, and that airline staff failed to intervene.

In a letter to Ms Muldoon, Ryanair said it prided itself on its crew’s high standards of service.

The said it regretted its high standards were “not reflected” to her “on this occasion”.

U.K: Man attacks paramedic and calls her a “dirty dyke”

ambulance

A man was given community service after he confessed to attacking a paramedic who was trying to help him while shouting anti-gay slurs at her.

Dean Stevens, 28, of Shoreham in southern England collapsed one day this past August. Paramedic Rose Waller showed up to help him and get him to a hospital, the Argus reports.

But instead of gratitude, she got homophobic abuse. Stevens called Waller a “c**t” and a “dirty dy*e,” according to prosecutor Suzanne Soros.

“I’m going to kill you,” he allegedly told her.

“He brought his face close to hers to make her feel intimidated and caused damage to the glass inside the ambulance when he kicked out,” Soros said.

He kicked Waller on her shoulders and neck. She tried to hide from him in the ambulance, but he still injured her.

South Africa: Teen boys raped lesbian to “correct” her sexuality

L2LCapeTown

While party-goers celebrated at Cape Town Pride Festival this weekend, three men held a lesbian captive and raped her nearby.

Police believe the suspects gang-raped her with the excuse they were ‘correcting’ her sexuality.

Now officers have arrested two boys, aged 14 and 17 for the attack. But a third suspect is on the run and investigators are vowing to track him down.

The attack happened late on Friday (28 February), just hours before the main party of the Cape Town Pride Festival. The party on Saturday was a highlight of the South African city’s LGBT+ annual celebrations.

Colonel Dawood Laing, commander of Grassy Park station in Cape Town told the Daily voice the victim was a 25-year-old woman.

She was walking to a shop in Lotus River on Friday, shortly after 10pm, when one suspect approached her. The man, who she knows, said someone wanted to speak to her at a house in Duiker Avenue, a few minutes walk away.

She went with him to a ‘hokkie’ or shack behind the main house. Once there, three men held her. Laing says they are all members of the Dog Pound gang – a well-established, violent Cape Town gang.

Laing says one of the teens put his arm around the woman and told her he was in the mood for sex.

‘He then threw her down to the floor of the hokkie and pulled off her pants. He sodomised her and the other two suspects also both sodomised her and they let her go.’

He says the traumatised woman ran home but found her family sleeping and waited until Saturday morning to report the matter.

Laing adds: ‘She went to her girlfriend who called the police and a case was registered.

‘She was taken to the hospital and officers went on the hunt for the suspects on Monday morning.

‘They found two of the gangsters, aged 14 and 17, while the third suspect is on the run.’

U.S: Lesbian Teacher Who Was Suspended Reaches $100,000 Settlement

Stacy

In August 2017, Stacy Bailey, an art teacher at Charlotte Anderson Elementary School in Arlington, Texas, introduced herself to her fourth-grade class with a slide show of her childhood, parents, friends and family.

Included in the mix was a photo of her with her partner, Julie Vasquez, who Ms. Bailey explained at the time was her future wife. They were dressed as “Dory” and “Nemo” from the movie “Finding Nemo.”

The presentation touched off a complaint from a parent that Ms. Bailey was “promoting the homosexual agenda.” Ms. Bailey was suspended for eight months from the public school, where she had taught for 10 years and had twice been voted Teacher of the Year.

This week, more than two years later, the Mansfield Independent School District agreed to pay Ms. Bailey $100,000 to settle a federal lawsuit that she had filed accusing the district of discriminating against her because of her sexual orientation.

U.K: Lesbian sisters given temporary reprieve from being returned to Pakistan

pakistan

Two sisters say they are “relieved but worried” after they narrowly avoided being deported to Pakistan where they say they face the threat of LGBT-based violence.

Samina, 52, and Nazia Iqbal, 48, from Stockport, were scheduled to be taken out of the country on Saturday night from Manchester airport after a judge said it was not “credible” that they are gay [sic], despite the sisters being publicly out for 20 years.

The pair were due to leave on a flight at 9pm on Saturday back to Pakistan but after being questioned by Sky News the Home Office appeared to make a U-turn on the decision as the sisters were not put on the plane.

When contacted by Sky News to ask why the sisters were being deported a spokesperson said that “each case is considered on its merits”.

The Iqbal sisters were not told they would not be put on the flight and only realised they were not leaving when Sky News informed them that the plane had taken off.

The following day the pair were moved to the Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre, which has been criticised over treatment of detainees, something the Home Office has previously said has been improved upon.

The pair are now in limbo awaiting a bail hearing on Tuesday.

U.K: ‘How do I convince the Home Office I’m a lesbian?’

angelbus

Angel fled Zimbabwe in fear of her life after police found her in bed with another woman five years ago. It’s taken most of the time since then for her to convince the Home Office that she is gay and will be persecuted if she returns. But how do you prove something you spent your life trying to hide?

In 2015, Angel found herself in an interview room in the north of England with a Home Office official whose job was to work out whether she was lying.

“How do I know I am a lesbian? How old was I when I knew? Who did I tell?” Angel recalls being asked.

“It is as if the Home Office expect a date and time.”

For seven hours, the interviewer picked at the threads of her life story.

The secret relationship with a girl at high-school and the betrayal of a family member she confided in about it.

Her forced marriage to an abusive husband in her 20s and the young daughter she had left behind in Zimbabwe.

Being raped by two men in her 30s who intended to “straighten her up”. And then, a few years later, the brutality from police when they discovered her in bed with a woman at a house-party.

Australia: Moana Hope reveals toll of AFL fans’ homophobic abuse

afl

Former AFLW star Moana Hope has opened up about the disgusting homophobic abuse she’s seen as both a footy player and an AFL fan.

Hope, who played in the AFLW for Collingwood and North Melbourne, said the abusive taunts even drove her away from attending AFL matches.

She told the Herald Sun during one 2017 match she played for Collingwood against Fremantle, a spectator called her a “stupid d*ke” from behind the fence.

“I don’t normally hear the crowd because I’m so drawn into the game. But when I heard that I was blown away,” she said.

“And I was hurt and a little bit scared because I thought, ‘Why are you calling me that? I’m a person.’

“Why are you using such a negative term? [After the game] I was a little bit scared, hesitant, to walk off the field because I was worried he’d be there to abuse me.”

“Who we fall in love with has nothing to do with these names. This is why kids in school are scared to be who they are whether they are gay or not, because you get picked on if you’re different.”

Hope said she and wife Isabella Carlstrom had “lost count” of the lewd comments they’d copped when in public together.

“I’ve had things said to us like, ‘One night with me will make you realise you need a man in your life,’” she said.

“I’ve been there when guys have grabbed Bella’s arse and said ‘You need an actual man’. Those things happen all the time.

U.S: Teacher forbids student with lesbian mothers from speaking in favour of same-sex marriage

teacher

A married lesbian couple in Michigan say their daughter’s teacher banned her from writing a speech about marriage equality for fear that it might “offend somebody in the class.”

The school district is investigating the incident.

Angela McDermitt-Jackson and Chris Jackson married in 2015 and are raising Destiny McDermitt, their 17-year-old daughter who is a junior at Hill McCloy High School in Montrose, Michigan.

Destiny’s teacher assigned her class a “Take a Stand Speech” in which students were told to speak in favor of or against a social issue important to them. Having two mothers, Destiny said she wanted to speak in support of same-sex marriage.

Destiny and other classmates claim that the teacher forbade her topic over worries it might offend other students. When Destiny asked whether the teacher could inquire if the topic offended her fellow classmates, the teacher declined her request.

The teacher also reportedly said she didn’t want to read or grade such a paper.

“No, we’re not going to do that,” the teacher reportedly said in front of the class. “I don’t want to hear about it, I don’t want to read about it, and I’m the one who has to grade it.”

Destiny was so upset that she contacted her mother Angela while still present in the class. Later, Destiny wrote a letter complaining to school officials. Destiny has since been moved into a different class.

“[It] offended me because I have two moms [who] are married and I really thought it was inappropriate,” McDermitt wrote. Her mothers, aunt, grandmother, grandfather, niece, and younger sister all support her.

U.S.: Lesbian injured in homophobic shooting at gay couple

Shakena Jefferson

Two gay men and a lesbian were shot and wounded this week in Miami in a bizarre drive-by shooting. The Miami-Dade Police Department said it was not investigating the incident as a hate crime.

Around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, men riding one or more all-terrain vehicles opened fire on a car with the two male victims inside and then fled, according to police.
One of the men was “struck in the head,” the other was “grazed in the head” and a woman sitting outside her home nearby was “stuck by a stray bullet,” police said.

Clive Khouri, one of the victims, told NBC Miami that he was sitting in his car with his boyfriend when a group of ATV riders surrounded the car and sprayed it with bullets. His boyfriend was taken to Jackson South Trauma Center in critical condition after being shot in the head.

The injuries to Khouri and Shakena Jefferson, the female victim, were not considered life-threatening.

Khouri told TV station WPLG that he thinks he and his boyfriend were targeted because the gunmen “probably saw us kissing in the car.”

U.S.: lesbian files discrimination complaint against Burger King

Ingrid Burger King discrimination

A lesbian who works at a D.C. Burger King says her manager harassed her because of her sexual orientation.

Ingrid, who asked the Washington Blade not to publish her last name, filed a complaint with the D.C. Office of Human Rights last Dec. 23.

The complaint notes Ingrid, 19, began to work at the Burger King on Connecticut Avenue near the University of the District of Columbia on Aug. 24, 2019. Ingrid in her complaint states her manager “found out about my sexual orientation in September of 2019” and “began to harass me by making inappropriate comments about my protected class.”

“In January 2020, despite my numerous complaints to respondent’s upper management, the hostile work environment was not addressed, and instead I continued to be subjected to unwelcome comments about my sexual orientation from my supervisor as well as my coworkers who respondent’s manager told about my complaints,” she wrote. “Instead of addressing the situation, respondent’s district manager … cut my workdays and hours and changed my schedule, affecting my pay.”

Burger King, which is based in Miami, received a 100 percent score in the Human Rights Campaign’s 2019 Corporate Equality Index.

Burger King’s corporate office has not returned the Blade’s requests for comment. Efforts to reach the Burger King where Ingrid works via telephone were unsuccessful.

Ingrid, who continues to work at the Burger King where she said the harassment has taken place, told the Blade it is her first job. She said she filed her complaint because she doesn’t “want another LGBTQ person or someone who is not out to go through this again.”

“I don’t want someone else to get anxiety or depression because of this,” Ingrid told the Blade.

Peru: security guard stops lesbians kissing on public transport

Peru Metro Guard

A citizen denounced a security guard from the Lima Metro because she and her partner were forbidden to kiss, both experiencing the lesbophobia at Central Station. When they kissed the guard approached them to tell them that they could not show affection.
The victim began to record the incident and asked which Metro rule prohibits demonstrations of affection in its vicinity. “It’s a public place and you can’t be kissing in a public place,” the man replied.

After she asked him where it says she couldn’t kiss her girlfriend, the guard told her to “set the example.” “Because there are children here. There is a small child. No one says  don’t feel love and romance, but there are places where you can and there are other places where you can’t show it,” he said.

Through a statement, the Municipality of Lima said they reject all types of discrimination and have therefore initiated a thorough investigation to establish responsibilities and any corresponding sanctions.

They said that security guards, counsellors and other personnel who have direct contact with the public at the stations are constantly trained to provide adequate care.

“The Lima municipality deeply regrets this incident and reiterates its commitment to continue working for equality and to sanction any discriminatory practice or act,” they stated.

Australian show Home and Away criticised for cutting lesbian scenes

Home and Away

Fans of Home and Away are questioning whether the show censored a gay storyline, after it ran romantic scenes involving a lesbian couple on New Zealand television, but cut the same moments from episodes aired in Australia.

While fans of the show in Australia have written on social media about their disappointment and confusion over the missing moments, Channel 7 said it accidentally aired the wrong versions of two episodes in Australia.

Alex Shillington covers queer pop culture on social media, and has written about the Home and Away characters, Alex Neilson and Willow Harris, who have become a new lesbian couple on the Channel 7 drama.

She said fans did not understand why the Australian audience did not see the full scenes between Alex and Willow.

“I would genuinely love for there to be a decent reason that is not them just censoring it,” she said.

But she said Channel 7’s explanation that it aired the wrong version of episodes “seems weird.”

U.S.: Catholic church counselling in spotlight after suicide of young lesbian

Alana Chen

Like many teenagers, Alana Chen was sometimes not where she’d told her parents she was going. But while other teens were sneaking out to parties, Chen would tell her parents she was going out with friends and instead take the bus from her family’s home in the suburbs of Boulder, Colorado, to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church downtown.

Chen was holding on to other secrets as well. Without her parents’ knowledge, Chen’s family says, she was receiving spiritual guidance from a priest at St. Thomas Aquinas, who told her that there was something she could never tell her family: She was a lesbian.

Chen struggled for many years to keep this secret, according to her family, and tried to follow the church’s teachings. But repressing her sexuality led to serious mental health problems that caused her to be hospitalized in 2016, Chen told The Denver Post last year.

Chen eventually left the church, feeling it was impossible to reconcile her sexual orientation and her Catholicism. In early 2019, she went away to Prescott College, in Arizona, to be farther away from St. Thomas Aquinas.

She seemed to be doing better, but on Dec. 7, while on a visit home, Chen, 24, was declared missing. After a search, her body was found at Gross Reservoir in Boulder County on Dec. 9. The Boulder County Coroner’s Office has ruled her death a suicide.

Chen’s death has focused attention on how religious institutions handle the question of sexuality in their counseling, especially when the counselor’s faith teaches that homosexuality is wrong or sinful. Last year, Colorado banned gay conversion therapy for minors. That ban, however, exempts religious counselors.

That’s something Chen’s mother and sister want to see changed. They believe the religious counseling Chen received contributed to her death.

Since her passing, Chen’s family said, nobody from the Denver Archdiocese has reached out directly to them. (Haas said this is because it did not believe that contact would be welcome.) Her funeral was held at a local Episcopal parish.

“People will say different things about her suicide and how that came to be,” Carissa Chen said. “I think the church played a huge role in the years of trauma and treatment that she went through and ultimately her suicide, and they’re just going to have to live with that. We all will now.”

Medical prejudice affects health of Cuban lesbians

semlac-mujeres

“There are lesbian women who fear going to the doctor and spend years and years without attending. Doctors say awful things when they see that you don’t meet the classic image of a woman painted and wearing heels, and that’s hard. So, given that rejection, women don’t go to the clinic anymore, ” Isbrailda Ruiz Bell tells SEMlac.

Ruiz Bell is an activist and member of the group of lesbian and bisexual women Las Isabelas, in the province of Santiago de Cuba, 762 km from the capital. According to her experience, stereotypes and prejudices can be found in different medical consultations, but in some there is more abuse.

“The gynecology consultation is a service where lesbian woman are subjected to more abuse. For example, they should ask for consent for students to attend the physical exam, but that does not happen, ”says Ruiz Bell.

Among the main problems are the low perception of risk of sexually transmitted infections, poor self-care and prevention of cervical and breast cancer, as well as depression and anxiety caused by lesbophobic discrimination.

“There are women who have been diagnosed with diseases at very advanced stages because of their fear of being rejected in a medical institution, I tell you from local experience and also because we have seen it in the workshops organized by Las Isabelas,” recalls Ruiz Bell.

The study confirms what the testimonies say: “The vast majority of women express having received a differentiated attention, nuanced by prejudices and stereotypes, attitudes expressed in gestures and a rigid body language, unfriendly and lacking sympathy, which becomes in an obstacle that limits their attendance to specialized health consultations”, the authors subscribe.

Russia: young lesbian escapes after family takes her to Azerbaijan for sexuality

Sevgiya Subkhani-Ismailova

Student Sevgiya Subkhani-Ismailova, who was forcibly taken away by her mother from Krasnoyarsk, told how her life was going after escaping. This was reported by the publication “Rise” in its Telegram channel. A woman took her daughter to another country after learning that she was a lesbian.

Earlier, Sevgiya admitted that she is still afraid of her relatives, because “they are just animals.” The girl said that she still does not have an understanding of how to move on. She reported that her mother sent her voice messages with threats, promising “a lot of blood.” Sevgiya believes that this is not a figure of speech, because the mother is able to “go to extreme measures.”

On January 15, a friend of Sevgiya’s, Polina, said that the girl had been deceived into Azerbaijan, having taken away her documents, phone and antidepressants. After this, several unsuccessful attempts by the girl to escape were reported. In a message from one of her friends, she complained of beatings and tying. On January 17, it became known that the girl managed to escape, but the details of the escape were not specified.

Argentina: minimal punishment for attacking lesbian couple

Fabián Vildoza

Fabián Vildoza, 36, approached Barbara and Lara and practically ordered them to stop hugging. “They should separate because there are children in the place,” snapped the man, whose lesbophobic attack escalated until he almost became physical.

Now, Prosecutor Adrián Dávila, in charge of the Criminal, Contravention and Fault Prosecutor’s Office No. 36 of the City of Buenos Aires, decided this week that the man, who assaulted the couple of women in November 2019 complete two government-run courses. We find this a rather mild sentence for the seriousness of the aggression, since we remember that, in addition to verbally assaulting them, the son of the same was present, giving a bad example of what respect for diversity is.

Chile: sushi restaurant expels lesbians for hugging

local sushi expulsan lesbianas

We have become aware of another lesbophobic incident which occurred in Chile. A video went viral on social networks in which two women alleged that they were discriminated against for their sexual orientation in a Peruvian food and sushi restaurant called Saki, in the heart of Santiago.

Through her Instagram account, one of the affected women alleged that the cashier told them that they could not be “hugging” because, according to them, it was inappropriate for them to do so in front of a girl who was eating at the store.

At one point in the video, one of the women speaks directly to the girl asking if the situation “affected her” in any way – to this the girl makes a clear sign denying any possible harm from the events.

This included feminists, homosexuals, aboriginals, academics, environmentalists, unmarried women or single moms,” Faulkner said. “The government made demonstrations illegal, a policy that resulted in several mass arrests … known demonstrators were ostracized from work places, spied on, bullied or beaten by police,” she describes.
