ILD: Lesbian Olympian rocks the basketball court

July 16 2021: TUCSON, Az. – The global audience of the It Gets Better Project received a glimpse into the lives of LGBTQ+ athletes who won’t let setbacks keep them from achieving their dreams in its new series “Passion. Power. Performance,” which streamed last month.

The docu-series shares inspirational stories behind proud LGBTQ+ athletes who are out and training for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, which episode one featured Arizona-based paralympic basketball player for Team USA, Courtney Ryan.

“I want to be an inspiration because you see me on the court doing some crazy tricks, tilting in a chair, doing all of this stuff that you wouldn’t expect,” Ryan said. “That’s what I love about wheelchair basketball — we get the opportunity to change perceptions and change ideas of what disability should look like. We aren’t fragile. We are competitors, and we’re ready to prove that,” she added.

Out and Training for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: Sports have always been part of Ryan’s life – and that didn’t change after she became paraplegic. Watch how with the support of her sister, she came out, and is changing perceptions of disability.

Germany: pulling together to help older lesbians during COVID-19

L2L Germany

21 April 2020: Gabriele Michalak at Rad und Tat eV – the Open Initiative for Lesbian Women (RuT) in Neukölln has been coordinating services for lesbians with disabilities for one and a half years. To do this, she organises workshops, courses, lectures, meetings and other events.

Before the coronavirus crisis, Michalak led the coming-out group for women over 40 with and without disabilities. Now she is organising the neighbourhood aid project “Together we can do it”, which has recently started.

How did the new neighbourhood aid come about?
Right at the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, by Easter we decided to cancel our events and courses by Easter because our target group belongs to the high risk group.

They are older and / or disabled lesbians. Because I knew that the situation was a moderate disaster for them, I immediately said that we need RuT neighborhood aid. Together with Ina Rosenthal and Joanna Czapska from our visitor service and with our web designer Konstanze Gerhard, I then implemented the whole service within two weeks.

Christian Mauricio García Silva, 45, is being investigated for lesbophobia against two women who were outside their home when he allegedly insulted, sexually harassed and intimidated them, in addition to physically assaulting them more than once.

The victims, identified as MJYC (38) and TAAC (44), were painting the fence surrounding the property where they live in Renca, Chile, when García Silva walked behind them and began to insult them for being lesbians. He brushed TAAC’s body, saying “I’m going to suck your tits to make you a woman, sick fag”.

Additionally, the perpetrator allegedly showed his erect penis to her.

When the alleged perpetrator returned, the aggression became even more violent – he began trying to hit her until she managed to push him; at the same time he repeated endless lesbophobic insults, sexual advances and death threats, until another neighbour approached to help them.

Paralympic swimmer Theresa Goh comes out as a lesbian

Born with spina bifida and confined to a wheelchair, she has always readily embraced aspects of herself that most will find tough to navigate, among them her disability and role as a trailblazer for disability sport in Singapore.  But even then, it has taken the 30-year-old half her life to reach this point where, as an ambassador for this year’s Pink Dot rally, she wants to be open about her sexuality – that she is gay.

Tell Ardrossan Accies RFC to Condemn Actions of Innes Frazer in Sexual Abuse of Lesbian Teenager

NO

#CondemnRapeCultureArdrossanRFC

On December 17, 2016, Innes Frazer, a rugby player for the Ardrossan Accies RFC, coaxed an 18-year old autistic lesbian into a storage container at Ardrossan Rugby Club in Ayrshire, Scotland.  He kissed the teenager, touched her breasts, exposed himself and forced her to touch him and then told her to lie about what he had done.  This is after Frazer had introduced the young woman to his friends as “the autistic lesbian” and himself as, “the only one who could turn her straight.”  Despite the victim being a lesbian, despite her having said “no”, and despite the judge explicitly stating that Frazer abused a vulnerable teenager for his ‘own sexual gratification’, he cleared him of sexually assaulting her.

A source close to the victim’s family have told Listening 2 Lesbians that the young woman is, “gutted at the verdict” and that “it took everything she had to go to the police in the first instance.”  The source also shared that the Ardrossan RFC have not given any support to the victim or her family, and have not condemned the actions of one of their members.

We are asking all of our sisters and our allies to join us in demanding that Ardrossan RFC make a statement condemning the sexual abuse Innes Frazer enacted on his victim and remove him from any association with the club.  We also demand that Ardrossan RFC prioritize the exposure of rape culture, including corrective rape culture, within its organization, and make appropriate steps to address and eradicate all forms of violence against women perpetrated by its members.

Please join us in contacting Ardrossan RFC on Twitter and Facebook:
