The State Federation of LGBT+ (Felgtbi+) reported that Spanish lesbians continue to suffer discrimination, with one in three lesbians experiencing harassment between 2020 and 2024, and one in 10 experiencing physical or sexual assault. In additon, 35% of lesbians between the ages of 18 and 24 (Generation Z) experienced bullying at school.
Felgtbi+ condemned this situation on Lesbian Visibility Day, based on some data from the ‘Lgtbi+ State 2024’ survey, undertaken by Felgtbi+, with data from 40dB.
Inés B. García, Felgtbi+’s Lesbian Policy Group coordinator, warned that lesbians are exposed to a high level of violence in all arenas. “In addition to harassment and physical and sexual violence, we also face workplace discrimination, hypersexualization, and stigmatization in diverse areas such as culture, politics, healthcare, sports, and education.”
Nguyen Xuan Truong (b. 1991) has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for (attempted) murder of Ms. Nhung (b. 1992). Truong and Ms Nhung were married in 2015 and had 3 children together, before divorcing in March 2024.
Truong suspected that Ms Nhung was in a lesbian relationship with Ms Trang (b. 1999) and that this relationhsip was the reason for their divorce.
In April 2024, Truong plotted to assault Ms Nhung and Ms Trang, buying a knife on April 8. On April 12 Truong borrowed Ms Nhung’s car and took their children to see their grandparents in his home town, packing the knife he had bought 4 days earlier. Returning on April 14, Truong was speaking to the two women while the children were taken to a nearby playground. Reportedly angry with the 2 women, Truong chased down and stabbed Ms Nhung and Ms Trang, both of whom attempted to defend themselves with pepper spray.
Once bystanders intervened to stop the attack, Truong left the scene and the victims were taken to hospital. He later handed himself in to police and confessed to his crime.
In April 2023, a 35 year old father in Laloubère (Hautes-Pyrénées) seriously assaulted his 14 year old daughter on discovering that she was attracted to girls. The man seriously assaulted her, verbally abused her, and made her fear rape if she did not renounce her sexuality. She was also made to write a letter of apology.
Having minimised his violence and abuse, on 19 March 2025, the Tarbes Criminal Court sentenced the man to 8 months in prison with probation. He must receive treatment and complete a parenting course.
Higui speaks after being acquitted of manslaughter, having defended herself during a brutal and traumatic attack and attempted corrective rape.
On October 16, 2016, Argentinian woman Eva Analía De Jesús, better known as Higui, was walking through the Buenos Aires town of Bella Vista when a group of men attacked her because of her sexual orientation. Higui — who was given that nickname because she was a soccer player and had curls like the Colombian René Higuita — told the police and later the judges that her attackers beat her and tried to rape her. “I’m going to make you feel like a woman…a lesbian,” Cristian Rubén Espósito told her, according to his account. She took out a knife and plunged it into his chest. She fainted and when she regained consciousness she was arrested. Despite the fact that she reported an attempted corrective gang rape and that she was found unconscious by police officers, with torn clothing and numerous injuries from beating, her allegations were never investigated. She was charged with simple murder and spent almost eight months in jail. This Thursday she was aquitted. (Translated)
(Original)
As reported by Il Mattino, during the night of 24-25 August, a 40-year-old man attacked and beat a lesbian couple, originally from Nocera Inferiore and living together in Castel San Giorgio. … The reason for the blind aggression? Pure and simple homophobia. The man brutally beat them solely because they are lesbians. The Nocera Inferiore Attourney and the deputy prosecutor Angelo Rubano are certain of this. The 40-year-old, already known to the police, went to the home of the two women, convinced them to go outside and attacked them, kicking and punching them.

A new lesbophobic attack was recorded on August 24 in Castel San Giorgio, in the province of Salerno, where two 40 year old women in a relationship were kicked and punched by a contemporary already known to the police. He had gone to their home to punish them for their homosexual relationship.

Natalí fears for her life and that of her mother. They live together in an apartment in the northern area [of La Florida] and she is certain that her neighbors want to evict them for her being lesbian. She has reported them for harassment and threats in court. For a month she has had a panic button that, she says, she has used on several occasions. “They physically and verbally assaulted us. They tell us that they want the apartment and that we must leave here,” she said.
Her 64-year-old mother was one of the first residents of the La Florida monoblock apartments and Natalí has lived there since she was born 35 years ago. According to her, in 2019 the harassment began. The final straw which resulted in her seeking justice was a neighbour threatening her with a firearm. “I got to my house and a neighbor came out, verbally abused me and told me I had to go. He pulled a gun from his waistband and put it to my head. My mum heard noises and opened the door. I took advantage of his distraction to escape and enter my house,” she recalled.

Insulted and beaten bloody for looking too much at the attackers’ girlfriends. The subject of the latest homophobic violence was a young woman who was with her partner last Friday in the Roman Gay Street, which is the main road of San Giovanni which connects the Basilica to the Colosseum. She was there to spend a few hours quietly, having a relaxed drink and a chat with her girlfriend. She could not imagine the turn that the evening would take. It was an ending, unfortunately, which is similar to the many others that have been increasing in number recently throughout Italy, from north to south, in a series of offenses and attacks against the LGBTQ community.
After the attacks in the Neapolitan area, in Milan, and in Tuscany, this most recent one happened in the heart of the capital a few days ago. This incident was reported by the actor Pietro Turano, activist and vice president of the Roman chapter of Arcigay. On his Facebook page he recounted the episode he partially witnessed. A young lesbian was targeted by two contemporaries who allegedly first verbally abused her and then attacked her with a small knife, wounding her in different parts of her body. (Translated)
In Arzano (in the metropolitan area of Naples) two young women aged 21 and 23 were allegedly first approached by a man who had seen them kissing in the car, who then verbally attacked them, slapping the younger woman.
Arcigay Napoli denounced the attack, explaining that they had received a letter from one of the two girls: “I am contacting you,” one of the two young women wrote, “because we need help. I was lucky enough to fall in love with a beautiful woman. We were in the car, in the usual alleyway below our house. An angry and hate filled man approached us, screaming at us. Despite my calm answer, while my girlfriend was starting the car to get away, the man slapped me twice, threatening to set fire to the car with us inside if we showed up again in the same place”.
On the seaside of Capo Miseno, in the municipality of Bacoli, Naples, two women were expelled from the beach because they were lesbians. The radio host Gianni Simioli denounced what happened .
Francesca and Martina were literally attacked by an elderly gentleman, annoyed by their presence, which he said would ‘upset’ his niece. “Get back to the mountains, stupid!”, the man shouted clearly upset. He was flanked by his daughter in the attack on the two girls.
“A gentleman suddenly approached us and asked us to leave because our presence raised questions for his niece who was beginning to ask questions. In reality we had not engaged in obscene behavior of any kind – there was only a very chaste kiss and the child, as far as we saw, had not even looked at us and was intent on playing. The gentleman insisted that he wanted us to leave and began to rant but we refused to leave. He seemed to have given up when he returned, this time accompanied by his daughter. He began to attack us and some of the boys who were defending us. The old man hit a guy with the pole of an umbrella while the woman slapped my arm after throwing several accusations at me, blaming me for things I had npt done. For example, she constantly referred to my nudity but I was wearing a bikini, just like her. We felt deeply humiliated, we didn’t do anything wrong. We just wanted to spend a day at the beach like any other person.“, said Francesca, who turned to the Regional Councilor of Europa Verde Francesco Emilio Borrelli to express her indignation for what happened.
The Oral Criminal Court of Santiago sentenced brothers Miguel and Reynaldo Cortez Arancibia brothers to 15 and 12 years of jail, respectively, for the brutal beating of Carolina Torres, a young lesbian who was attacked while walking with her partner on the night before Valentine’s Day 2019.
At the beginning of July, the court declared both guilty of the crime of attempted murder, aggravated by their antagonism to the sexuality and gender non conformity of the victim (referencing the Antidiscrimination Act).
Prior to the beating, the Cortez brothers were following Carolina, who was holding hands with her girlfriend. They then verbally abused her because of her sexual orientation and presentation, before proceeding to attack her.
According to the prosecution claims presented by the Western Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office, “with the intention of killing her, the defendants approached her, trapping her and positioning themselves in such a way that she was left defenseless and prevented from escaping.” (Translated)
(Original)

On June 1, a new case of intolerance was reported in Bogotá. According to the young woman’s account, on May 29 she took a taxi in Chapinero, to go to the Las Brisas neighborhood, in the town of San Cristóbal.
According to her account for W Radio, when they reached their destination the taxi driver charged her $ 40,000 for the ride, a price that seemed excessive.
She said that after appealing the price, the taxi driver closed the door, looked at her and asked if she was a lesbian, to which the woman replied that she was, but “that it had nothing to do with it.”
Onhearing that, according to the story by Yeimy Paola Triana, the man took a crossbrace and began to beat her until he smashed her head and broke her nose. (Translated)

2 June 2021 – Harford County Sheriff’s Office is looking for two suspects in a homophobic assault on a Baltimore County woman outside the Abingdon Home Goods store.
The victim told deputies she was in the Home Goods parking lot, in the Constant Friendship Shopping Center, between 12:30 and 1 p.m. May 27 when two people pulled up in a vehicle, yelled homophobic remarks at her, and threw an unknown liquid at her before driving off.
The victim believed the liquid was water, but about an hour later, her skin started itching and she went to urgent care for treatment of what appeared to be chemical burns, according to a press release.
The two lesbian activists told Ouest-France that they attended a LMPT rally on January 9 in Angers, western France. The two decided to counter-demonstrate with banners that read “Lesbians can be mothers without a father” and “It takes more than heterosexuality to be a good father.”
They said that two men, who appeared to be with PMTCT, blocked them on the street. The men asked where the women were going. When the women said they were going to the demonstration, the men became violent.
People passing by didn’t even react.
“While we were running, one of them pushed us with his shoulders,” said one of the women. “They told us they would not let us pass.”
“He pushed me and took the poster from me,” said the other woman. “I raised my arm to try to get it back and he pushed me violently. Adèle started screaming that they were attacking two women in the middle of the street, but the people who passed did not even react.”
One of the women said that, at that moment, one of the men “tore the poster, grabbed my left arm and held me with his arm behind his back. Then I heard it break.”

The victim explained that at that point the man and woman “came out to insult me, shouting that I was queer and dirty. The neighbour hit me on my arm and back with a broomstick and together with his partner they hit me on different parts of my body until I fell to the ground. Between the two of them they kicked my head, in front of many neighbors and children. I lost consciousness,” she said.
In addition, she added that when her partner came to outside to help her, the insults continued. “They called us “queer, dirty, “cuernúas” and dirty old dykes.” Only the presence of commune security officials stopped the attack. They called the Carabineros, who never came.

A 20-second video captures the assault – one woman is on the ground and her attacker kicks her in the head. She and her girlfriend are 22 and 29 years old. They have been living together for three years in one of the Atc apartments in via Adamello in Novara, a difficult neighborhood. They were attacked by two neighbours because they are lesbians. Their lawyer Maurizio Antoniazzi presented their complaint to the prosecutor’s office yesterday. “We ask that a charge of attempted murder is considered”, explains the lawyer, as the kick to the head could have killed the victim. The woman, the younger of the two, was hospitalized and then discharged with a thirty-day recovery prognosis for a broken nose and a fractured orbit.

A few days ago, on December 13 [2020], the journalist Irantzu Varela suffered a lesbophobic attack at the hands of some neighbors This is how it was explained by Pikara Magazine, the media outlet at which she works: “They were annoyed with Varela for having left some cardboard to recycle next to the door of her apartment. At night, the couple rang her doorbell and entered her house showing their anger and throwing various objects in the journalists house to the ground.
In addition to punching her several times in the face, they called her a “fucking lesbian,” “degenerate,” and “tomboy.” Varela denounced the attack on the Ertzaintza. However, it is not the first time that she has had to do this: as a feminist activist, she has been subjected to harassment and abuse on social media for years. Beyond social media and in the premises shared with the editorial staff of Pikara Magazine, she has also dealt with fascist graffiti repeatedly in the last year.
