Chile: Alleged attackers of Carolina Torres to face trial

After a year of investigating, the Public Prosecutor finally set a hearing date in the case of the lesbophobic attack that almost took the life of Carolina Torres. The prosecution says that the men who attacked Torres will face charges of attempted manslaughter and requested a 15-year prison sentence.

According to El Mercurio, n January the prosecutor, Eduardo Baeza, head of the local Prosecutor’s Office in Pudahuel, presented the charges against the two men for being “motivated by the sexual orientation” of Torres, made “sexuality- and presentation-based insults” before they kicked her back, struck her head with a stick and continued to beat her when she was already on the ground.

Tras un año de investigaciones, finalmente el Ministerio Público fijó una audiencia de preparación del juicio oral, para el caso de lesbofobia que casi se llevó la vida de Carolina Torres. En este sentido, la fiscalía declaró que los hombres que atacaron a Torres deberán enfrentar cargos por el delito de homicidio frustrado, y solicitó una pena de 15 años de cárcel.

De acuerdo con El Mercurio, el persecutor, Eduardo Baeza, jefe de la Fiscalía local de Pudahuel, presentó en enero la acusación contra los dos hombres quienes, “motivados por la orientación sexual” de Torres, realizaron “insultos alusivos a su orientación sexual y su forma de vestir”, luego, la golpearon en la espalda con puntapiés y con un palo en la cabeza, e incluso continuaron atacándola cuando ella ya había caído al suelo.

Todas estas graves lesiones dejaron a la joven con “alteraciones atencionales, de memoria y ejecutivas, dejándola con una discapacidad con consecuencias de largo plazo que la dejaron inútil para el trabajo”.
