Italy: neighbour in court for stalking and harassing lesbian couple

L2L Italy
September 2019, Ravenna

A 55-year-old woman has gone to trial for stalking two neighbours in her apartment block who she has been tormenting for years for being lesbian and in a civil union.

The stalker insulted, harassed and disturbed the peace of the two women based on her intolerance of their sexual orientation as lesbians. Hostile phrases like “bad lesbians, you suck”, noise, spite at all hours of the day, threats – all of these acts increasingly frustrated the two victims, leading one to suicidal thoughts.

The neighbour, finally reported to the authorities, appeared before a judge for apreliminary hearing. The judge, , Corrado Schiaretti, gave leave to the parties to compensate the victims and settle the matter out of court.

Lesbophobia: Living as a ‘truck’ in Chile

Chile Trucks and the red zone of murder

“One is a truck before being a woman, before being a lesbian. You realise that you are not like the rest, but you do not know what you are either (…) if one is 10 years old and she doesn’t know the word lesbian, you have never seen a lesbian, you have nowhere to recognize yourself. You know what you are not, but you have no idea who you are, and you try to fit in and it doesn’t work out. You realise you end up being the truck of the group, but what is the place of the group truck?”

The appearance of the trucks is located around the 1900s as a symbol of lesbian visibility. At that time there was social tolerance for a romantic friendship between women, even married; as long as it was not shown socially. In response to this, in “the West there is an emergency of a lot of lesbians who start to wear men’s clothes and especially to dress as men from the middle up and down with a skirt.” A “different class, neither male nor female, but lesbian visible as a social and political fact” appears.

In Chile, the term truck has a link with the social class, “it speaks of the poorest lesbian, who is also more masculine, but it is because of a cultural terminology issue,” says Opazo, who adds that there are also upper-class male women , but they are not told trucks; they are called “tomboy” which is a gringa lesbian term.

Chile: lesbians harassed and expelled from sanctuary

Chile

The Homosexual Integration and Liberation Movement (Movilh) denounced “continuous episodes of discrimination” against a young lesbian couple at the Schoenstatt Shrine, located in Puerto Montt – a free access space, where gay or lesbian entry is not allowed, according to the caretaker of the place.

The couple had been harassed for months by the caretaker, who every time he saw them, expelled them from the compound. The last incident occurred on September 9, but this time the couple chose to record the subject, who acknowledges that homosexuals are not admitted to the Sanctuary, in addition to accusing women of ugly attitudes, threatening them with “more serious problems” and to denounce them to the police.

“This is a case of lesbophobic violence, a serious episode where two women are humiliated, causing them great emotional damage. These abuses are unacceptable and illegal in light of the Zamudio Law. The women reported the case to police, who were emphatic in pointing out that they cannot be prevented from entering the Shrine because they are lesbians, ”said Movilh-Los Lagos president José Arcos.

The Netherlands: Lesbian Couple Assaulted; Perpetrator Extinguishes Cigarette on Woman’s Body

A lesbian couple was assaulted at a terrace in Rotterdam on Friday. One of the women managed to chase after the perpetrator and lead the police right to him. A 34-year-old man from Rotterdam was arrested, the police said.

The woman and her wife were having something to eat at a terrace on Lijnbaan on Friday afternoon when a man started making obscene gestures and comments at them. At first they ignored him, but after “umpteenth annoying remark” one of the women decided to reply, the police said in a statement.

The man did not like the reply and attacked the woman. He pushed a burning cigarette into her neck and hit her multiple times, before casually walking away.

Lesbians Are a Target of Male Violence the World Over

by Julie Bindel

ugandalgbtq-648x500.jpg

Lesbians in the U.K. have fought for and achieved legislative equality with heterosexuals. We can marry, adopt and foster children, and have next-of-kin rights with a same-sex partner. It is now illegal to fire us from our jobs or refuse goods and services on the grounds of our sexuality.

These changes also are prevalent across the majority of states in the U.S. and in numerous other countries around the world. But there are still plenty of places that have either rolled back the rights of lesbians, such as Russia under President Vladimir Putin, or, under the influence of religious fundamentalists, have introduced archaic and extremely punitive legislation affecting LGBTQ people.

A lesbian couple say they were jeered at by staff for kissing in a takeaway.

While waiting for their food to arrive they kissed on the lips, at which point they said they heard jeers from staff members directed at them.

Miss Metcalfe said: “I was shocked. I asked if they would react like that to a man and a woman kissing and they said, ‘No, because that’s normal’.

“It was nothing outrageous, just a normal kiss – like any couple would do on a night out.

Update: Nigerian lesbian activist wins UK asylum claim after 13-year battle

apata.jpg

The Home Office has granted refugee status to a prominent Nigerian LGBT activist, ending a 13-year battle over her right to remain in the UK.

Aderonke Apata, 50, says she knew she was gay from the age of 16 and was persecuted in Nigeria. She has been recognised internationally for her human rights work, and recently received Attitude magazine’s Pride award.

Apata arrived in the UK in 2004 but did not immediately claim asylum on the grounds of her sexuality. Until 2010, lesbian, gay and bisexual asylum seekers were often forcibly removed to their home countries if it was deemed safe for them to “live discreetly”.

In 2012 she filed an asylum claim but was considered by the Home Office to be lying about being in a lesbian relationship. Apata appealed, but was told by the judge: “What is believed is that you have presented yourself as a lesbian solely to establish a claim for international protection in an attempt to thwart your removal … It is considered that your actions are not genuine and simply a cynical way of gaining status in the UK.”

U.S: Photo of lesbian student wearing tuxedo omitted from yearbook

tux.jpg

Holley Gerelds wanted to wear a tuxedo for her senior yearbook portrait. The photographer said it was fine, she recalled. Proofs show her smiling in a black jacket and bow tie.

But when the Alabama graduate perused her yearbook on Thursday, she told The Washington Post, she had to flip to the last page to find her name — misspelled “Geralds” and listed without a photo, under the heading “Not Pictured.”

Gerelds, who is lesbian, said she was not surprised that her photo was left out — not because of anything her school had done previously, but because she’s used to seeing reports of “LGBTQ+ people getting harassed and sometimes even killed, always discriminated against.” She says she didn’t do anything to merit being left out of a high school keepsake; she paid and showed up on time for her photograph, which was shot last year.

gay-couple.jpg

For three years, Mary Catherine Trollinger attended Gracewood Baptist Church in Southaven, Mississippi. She served as its college director for a while and even met Olivia Jennings, the woman who would become her wife, a year ago at the church.

When Gracewood’s pastor Barry Baker found out about their relationship a few months ago, he told the couple to leave the church and not come back. Now, months later, Pastor Baker has sent a nasty letter to Trollinger continuing to slam her “unbiblical” lesbian relationship, and Trollinger isn’t having it.

Bolivia: Lesbians discriminated against on bus

LaPazBus Apology

A lesbian couple reported through their Twitter account that a PumaKatari bus official discriminated against them, interpreting that the act of boarding the bus holding hands implied “a lack of respect for families.”

USA: teacher sues for being fired because she’s lesbian

Clare Pioneers

Clare Public Schools is being sued in federal court by a former adult education teacher who says she was fired because she’s a lesbian.

Julie Mayra, hired by the district sometime around August 2012, said she had a great working relationship with her colleagues — including being promoted to a full-time position — until the district hired a new superintendent and principal for the 2016-07 academic year. Then, according to her complaint filed in federal court, things slid rapidly.

In particular, Georgette Kelley, the new principal, began to target Mayra, according to the court record. Kelley is a devout Pentecostal Christian who is vocal about her opposition to homosexuals.

Kelley is no longer listed on the Clare Public Schools website as employed there.

Update: Lesbian Police Couple Lose Discrimination Claim against Australian Federal Police

Emma-Kate McPherson , left, and her partner Kathryn Lee Richens at the Federal Court on Monday.

An Australian Federal Police officer has lost her discrimination claim after the force repeatedly denied her transfer requests to the same city as her same-sex partner.

Detective Sergeant Kathryn Richens and Senior Constable Emma-Kate McPherson began a relationship in 2013 while based in Canberra and Brisbane.

The couple claimed that despite the repeated transfer requests they were told their case is not the same as that of a heterosexual couple, the AAP reported.

In a 2013 letter, they said they were informed that their “circumstances are not comparative to the co-location of heterosexuals who meet genuine compassionate reasons” and that their living apart was “not the AFP’s problem”.

Mexico: lesbians forced to live as sisters for 30 years seek legal protection as they age

LESBIANAS-MAYORES

Sara and Carmen are false names. They use them because they don’t want to make their identity known, but Sara and Carmen are a couple of Mexican lesbians who have been together for over 30 years. They live in Tabasco which still has not passed equal marriage legislation.

Mexico is not a good place for diversity and so they have been posing as sisters for neighbours and some friends for 30 years. … One of them has diabetes, in addition to an amputated leg and other ailments that mean her life may be nearing its end. That would mean that one of them would be a widow without any pension and without being able to control her possessions.

“On this occasion they decided to make the trip to another state instead of processing an amparo that takes 12 to 18 months in Mexico City to finalize equal marriage, because one of the members of the couple is very sick , and there is no time to wait for a judge’s decision. With the money raised (from a neighbourhood activity) the couple will be supported with their transfer, the witnesses and the expenses of the procedures, because what is sought with the legalization of the union is to guarantee the rights of the pension and inheritance of assets that they have achieved in 30 years of living together, ”said the president of the Community Center for Inclusion AC Armando Cornelio Dionisio.

Armando Cornelio Dionisio.

Colombia: court orders liquor store to apologise to lesbian couple

Lesbianas-barranquilla-el-heraldo

After reviewing the case, the Constitutional Court of Barranquilla ordered the homophobic owner of a liquor store to apologize to a lesbian couple. The case reached the Court after a legal battle initiated by one of the lesbians discriminated against for homophobia in a liquor store in Barranquilla, Colombia . According to the complainants, the events occurred in July last year. The lesbian couple went to La Licorería in Barranquilla. They conversed holding hands when the owner demanded that they be released, telling them that: “The establishment is not an environment for same-sex couples […] Such shows are not allowed .”

The couple then called the waiter to complain about the attitude of the owner of the establishment. However, they did not receive help from him either, who replied that he ” did not like those behaviours. ”

It was then that the lesbian couple decided to pay their bill, and wait for an answer from the owner, but they did not get any. The homophobic man only replied that these were the establishment’s policies and that they had previously had “image problems” due to the presence of same-sex couples.
(Translated)

Venezuela: School discriminates against 13 year old for lesbian kiss

Karina Barbosa

Tamara Adrián said … that the Instituto Escuela School located in Prados del Este, Caracas, denied the re-enrolment of a teenager on allegations of “bad application and bad behaviour”, this after having kissed an older [female] classmate when they were in a school transport, according to the Efecto Cocuyo web portal.

The girl’s mother, Karina Barbosa, complained to the aforementioned media that her daughter has not been the only person harmed by these school decisions. In the case of his son, he was also denied the re-enrolment process for the 2019-2020 school year, as well as the other educational transportation partner and a friend of his daughter.

With this measure taken by the Instituto Escuela school, four students are being affected by not being allowed to re-enrol.

Barbosa also worked as an English teacher at that school for six years until she resigned in 2017. Two years after having left the academic institution, she sees the way in which her children are discriminated against by administrative staff.

The kiss happened on May 17, and it was on May 20 when the campus took action against the girl to a point that the staff of Instituto Escuela began to monitor her in everything she did – this situation remained until the end of the 2018 – 2019 school year. “She had to be accompanied to the bathroom, to the infirmary, they even told her where she could sit in the transport,” said Karina Barbosa.

U.K: Lesbian actor is scared to hold partner’s hand in public

michelle-hardwick.jpg

Actor said that while she received praise for her portrayal of a same-sex relationship on the popular soap, being in one in real life was a different experience.

Emmerdale star Michelle Hardwick has said she sometimes feels scared to hold her partner’s hand in public for fear of a homophobic attack.

Hardwick, who plays vet Vanessa Woodfield, told the Sunday Mirror that she and show producer Kate Brooks sometimes “instinctively let go of each other’s hands” if they see a group of young men “because we’re scared they’ll turn on us”.

“We live with that fear every day,” she said, later adding: “I feel like we’re going backwards in society with our attitudes.”

“So people who say, ‘Gay Pride? Why isn’t there a Straight Pride?’ I’ll tell you why, because you don’t need it. Because luckily for you, you’re able to be affectionate with your partner in public and you won’t be abused for it. It’s absolutely vile what goes on.”

Spain: Lesbian Couple Fight to Keep Popular Bar After Neighbours’ ‘Harassment Campaign’

bettys-couple.jpg

The Lesbian couple who own Betty’s International Music Bar, in Cala Egos, fear their venue will be forced to close after the town hall warned them about the number of calls it has been receiving.

That is despite the venue being 100% legal and holding the correct licences and after having invested more than €30,000 in sound-proofed ceilings, doors and windows.

“Our neighbours just want us out, it’s been a non-stop campaign of harassment,” co-owner Leanne Green, 37, from near Leeds, told the Olive Press last night.

“The owner of the apartment upstairs told us he doesn’t want ‘dirty lesbians’ around here and his kids who live there have spat on our terraces and sometimes we see them just staring into our CCTV cameras trying to intimidate us.”

India: Lesbian couple thrown out of bar, threatened with exposure

Rasika Gopalakrishnan and Shivangi Singh Photo: Facebook/itsshivangisingh

Two women in their early twenties are going viral online for sharing their harrowing experience which they faced at a club in Chennai. The two women alleged that they were treated badly by the club because they are a same sex couple.

Rasika Gopalakrishnan and Shivangi Singh, took to their respective Facebook pages to tell their experience at a bar called The Slate Hotels.

In a long FB post, Rasika recounted her experience saying that the club apparently accused them of doing something else and insisted them to leave the premises even though they did not do anything.

“I am devastated by the assumptions that are made about people who deviate even slightly from the norm. They decided to make a ‘threat’ out of us for absolutely no good reason, and worse, tried to make us feel guilty for something we didn’t do.”

She also accused the hotel of threatening them by saying that they had a video of them making out and they would make the video public.
