Canada: Lesbian couple denied service from videographer who doesn’t film ‘homosexual weddings’

kelly-roberts-and-mallory-arthur

As soon as Mallory Arthur and Kelly Roberts got engaged in January, they started planning their October 2021 wedding.

But this week’s excitement wasn’t what the Woodstock, Ont., couple, both 26 years old, were bargaining for. When they tried to book videographer Caramount Pictures, based in Brantford, Ont., for their wedding, the owner told them the business will not work with a same-sex couple.

The refusal came on Monday, 15 years to the day after Canada legalized same-sex marriage, on July 20, 2005.

“I say this with much care, because I know your union is incredibly important to you, but we do not film homosexual weddings,” Cara Hamstra, the business owner, wrote in an email.

Anti-bias group decides in favour of Russian lesbian couple

Screen Shot 2020-06-13 at 1.10.28 am

The Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women made a groundbreaking decision in favor of a Russian lesbian couple.

It was the first time the 23-member CEDAW committee accepted and decided a same-sex case in its more than 40-year history.

“Our sacrifice makes at least some sense,” O.N., 33, and D.P., 29, the Saint Petersburg lesbian couple who took Russia to task for refusing to recognize an attack they endured six years ago was a hate crime, wrote in an email interview. “It confirms our position that we were deprived of the opportunity to achieve justice and protection in our own country.”

The couple added that the decision was “important for us” and they are proud that “our case has become historic,” they wrote. The couple called it “one of the steps toward Russia without homophobia.”

The couple requested that only their initials be used for safety reasons.

Kazakhstan: Lesbian activist receives threats after responding to homophobic MMA fighter

nurbibi

A professional MMA fighter in Kazakhstan has unleashed attacks on LGBTQ people. Now a gay [sic] soccer player and her girlfriend are afraid for their safety.

Kuat Khamitov, also known as Naiman, attacked an LGBTQ-supportive video in Instagram, saying in the comments that LGBTQ people are “worse than dogs,” adding that dogs should be offended by such a comparison. His supporters followed up with comments about LGBTQ people being worse than pigs.

LGBTQ activist Nurbibi Nurkadilova responded with an open letter to Khamitov, criticizing him for his disturbing statement.

“Why do you compare my human rights, the rights of a citizen of this country, with those of a dog?” She asked. “Do you consider me powerless? Or do you compare my mental development with the canine? Or maybe you wanted to draw a parallel between the fact that we also need to put on a chain like dogs? I do not fully understand your ridiculous and stupid statement!”

Nurkadilova said the response from Khamitov’s fans and others in her home country has been swift and deeply disturbing.

“I have received thousands of messages with threats and insults,” she told Outsports in an exclusive interview. “They are all in Russian and Kazakh but say, ‘You’ll burn in hell,’ ‘I will kill you,’ ‘You’re worse than an animal,’ ‘I’ll rape you,’ ‘You don’t belong in this country,’ ‘Go to America,’ ‘You’re the shame of the country,’ and other ugly comments. A normal person would be shocked.”

Nurkadilova told Outsports she is particularly afraid for her girlfriend, who is a soccer player who has represented Kazakhstan on the national team as recently as last year.

“I’m afraid for her,” she said.

U.S: Lesbian teen denied graduation over dress code

Dynasia

Dynasia Clark is a senior from Lamar High School in Darlington County. Like most high school students, Clark loves music, writes poems, and couldn’t wait to graduate.

While other schools across the nation aren’t able to hold an in-person graduation because of the coronavirus pandemic, the school was able to find a way to still have a ceremony.

On Tuesday, Clark was getting prepared to walk the stage and become an official high school graduate. But before she was able to take her seat she was told she was not allowed to walk because of what she was wearing– pants.

Being openly gay [sic], she wanted to feel comfortable in her skin as she experienced this once in a lifetime moment.

The school, not the county, had put in place a dress code for the event which required girls to wear a dress. For Dynasia, she wasn’t expecting the school to stop her.

“I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal, because we’re already here, we’re already fixing to walk but now I can’t go because of a dress code,” Clark says.

Realizing that school officials were not going to change their minds, she walked off the field.

“I was angry more than anything because we worked hard to even have a graduation and then I can’t walk because I don’t got on a dress,” Clark says.

However, understanding the importance of this moment, she decided to stay and watch the ceremony from the other side of the gate.

“I was okay standing outside the gate watching them graduate because they’re my classmates,” says Clark. “I wouldn’t want to just go home because I can’t walk.”

As names were being called to receive their diplomas, Clark was ready to hear her name to acknowledge all the hard work she put in the past four years.

But it was never said.

Update: Kenyan court refuses to lift ban on acclaimed lesbian romance film

rafiki

A Kenyan court on Wednesday refused to lift a ban on a locally-made acclaimed film portraying a lesbian romance, the film’s producer said, adding that she would continue to fight for freedom of expression in the East African nation.

The film “Rafiki” – which means friend in Kiswahili – was banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) in April 2018 on the grounds that it promotes homosexuality in a country where gay sex is a criminal offence.

Rafiki’s producer Wanuri Kahiu appealed against the ban, arguing it was against freedom of expression which is enshrined in Kenya’s constitution. But the constitutional court stayed the ban, saying there was no violation of freedom of expression.

“We are disappointed of course. But I strongly believe in the constitution and we are not going to give up,” Kahiu told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

“I think it is very important for us to define what freedom of expression means in Kenya as per our constitution. We are going to appeal. The ruling today is not a true reflection of what the constitution says.”

U.S: Lesbian Who Sued Sheriff After He Fired Her Defeats Him in Dem Primary

charmaine_mcguffy

A lesbian candidate who is suing the sheriff of Hamilton County, Ohio, has beaten him in the Democratic primary for the office.

Charmaine McGuffey, a former Hamilton County deputy sheriff, defeated Jim Neil by winning nearly 70 percent of the vote Tuesday, The Enquirer of Cincinnati reports. She will face Bruce Hoffbauer, a Cincinnati police lieutenant who was the only candidate in the Republican primary, in November. Cincinnati is the seat of Hamilton County, the third most populous county in Ohio. McGuffey would be the first Ohio sheriff from the LGBTQ community and one of only a few ever elected in the nation. She was endorsed by the LGBTQ Victory Fund.

McGuffey and Neil have both been with the sheriff’s department since the early 1980s. Neil was elected sheriff in 2012, and the following year he promoted McGuffey to major in command of jail and court services, making her the highest-ranking woman in the department’s history. In 2015, she was named local and regional Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. The following year, the Ohio House of Representatives named her Public Citizen of the Year. During her tenure, the Hamilton County Justice Center went from being the worst-ranked large jail in Ohio to the best.

But Neil fired her in 2017. She says it was because she’s a lesbian and she raised concerns about the use of force by officers. He says it was because she created a hostile work environment. She has sued him in federal court, and the lawsuit is still pending.

Kenya: Lesbians are being raped and living in fear in refugee camps

kenya

Eva Nabagala hoped she and her young son would be safe from her family when they fled Uganda for a Kenyan refugee camp – but instead, the 28-year-old says she was attacked and raped there as punishment for being a lesbian.

“I have been threatened with death, I have been beaten, I have been harassed sexually, and I have been sexually abused, raped,” Nabagala told Reuters by phone.

Nabagala said she and her now two-year-old son came to Kenya in 2018 after her family threatened to kill her because she is a lesbian.

“I ran from my home … because I wanted to be safe, I wanted protection, but it has turned into something the opposite,” Nabagala said.

U.S: Lesbian couple’s house vandalized with hate speech & obscene drawings

Keri and Katrina Sprinkle live in Borden in southern Indiana. On April 10, they woke up to find the words “LESBIN” [sic] and “QUEER” spray-painted on their truck. Penises were painted on the truck and their driveway too.

The vandal also painted a message on their house, “I love penis,” written in symbols.

“I was in total shock,” Keri told WLKY. “I collapsed in the middle of the street and just started crying because it was that whole feeling of violation and how could someone not only do this to my place of dwelling, but my vehicle, and then we found another graffiti mark in the driveway, and then we found one on her car as well.”

Katrina posted images of the graffiti on Facebook.

“I will pay a reward for anyone who can tell me, without a doubt, who did this!!!” she wrote.

A third of UK lesbian mothers experience homophobia from other parents

img_9389

One in three lesbian mothers in Britain has experienced homophobia from other parents, while the same proportion have children who have been bullied for having two mums, according to a rare study of LGBT+ women published on Monday.

The online survey by research firm Kantar of more than 1400 LGBT+ women – one of the largest of its kind – found 37% of lesbian mothers suffered discrimination from other parents, while the same number’s children were victimised.

The study offers a rare look at the plight of lesbian mothers in the country, where reported homophobic hate crimes rose 25% in England and Wales in the year to March 2019 and three-fold since same-sex marriage was legalised in 2013.

U.S: Mother vows she’ll get personal justice after teenage lesbian daughter killed

ashanti-posey-1

A 17-year-old girl in Tennessee was shot to death in a possible anti-gay hate crime.

Ashanti Posey, a high school senior in Nashville, was shot and killed last Thursday, April 9 while driving with another 17-year-old in the car with her.

Police believe that Posey was leaving a neighborhood after a small marijuana sale, but the girl’s mother doesn’t think that the drug deal had anything to do with her daughter’s death.

“This was out of jealousy because my daughter was openly gay and in a happy relationship with a young lady for two years,” she told WTVF.

“Sometimes being different is not accepted in society, it’s just not.”

Cameroon: Lesbians imprisoned for two years for hugging

cameroon

Eva, a hairstylist, is a slender 28-year-old with large black eyes, a round face, long hair and a nose ring.

Marie, 24, has a thin face, small eyes, dimples on her cheeks and short, yellow-tinted hair.

They have been in a loving, committed relationship for years.

Over a period of two years, they had been living undisturbed in a small community in eastern Cameroon where they moved in 2016 to be out of sight and safe from violence. For while, the move was a success.

It was a contrast with the busy city of Yaoundé, which Eva and Marie left four years ago after their families rejected them after learning that they two women were in love with each other.

Their enjoyment of a quiet, peaceful life ended in August 2018 after they attended a friend’s party in downtown Bertoua. That night, when the time came to go home, Eva called for a motorcycle taxi. As they waited for it to arrive, they hugged passionately.

Marie recounted what happened:

“We were both standing on the sidewalk waiting for the bike. I was wearing a black mini dress and my partner in pants. I was glued to her, caressing her body, while she had her hand around my waist. This  behavior aroused the curiosity of police officers, who concluded that we were homosexuals.”

The officers demanded to see their papers, then arrested them.

After Eva and Marie had been in custody for two days, police offered to release them if they paid 200,000 CFA francs (about US $334). They didn’t have the money, so they were put on trial, convicted of homosexual activity, and sentenced to two years in prison with a fine of 138,000 CFA francs each (about US $238 each).

They are scheduled to be released from Bertoua Central Prison in September 2020 — but only if they can pay the fine, which they cannot. If the fine isn’t paid by that point, their sentence will be extended as they work it off.

U.S: Lesbian chef zoombombed with racism and homophobia

jchong

J. Chong, a sous chef at a local restaurant, was 30 minutes into her spinach pesto-making class when a wave of newcomers joined, but only to attack her with malicious comments.

In an Instagram post, Chong noted that she had been warned of “Zoombombers” — trolls wreaking havoc on the platform — who may join the class, but she shrugged it off at first.

Unfortunately, little did she expect that the seconds-long “interruption” would be so offensive that it caused her to freeze for “what felt like 10 minutes.”

“At first I was excited! I was proud that more people were interested in watching my class,” Chong recalled. “Then all of a sudden, we hear vicious slurs come over the speakers — ‘f*ggot,’ ‘d*ke,’ ‘lesbian,’ … ‘You f*cking ch*nk’ [and] ‘You ch*nk, the coronavirus is happening because of you!’

U.S: Lesbian judge sanctioned for displaying rainbow flag in court

judge

A judge in Texas has been sanctioned by the state for displaying a rainbow flag in her courtroom.

Bexar County Court’s Judge Rosie Speedlin Gonzalez is out and she flies the rainbow flag in her court because it shows that “everyone is welcome into this courtroom.”

She didn’t think that the flag would be a problem because other judges have flags and symbols in their courtrooms. One judge who’s a veteran has a camouflage robe and another flies an Irish flag to take pride in his heritage, she said.

But San Antonio lawyer Flavio Hernandez was “offended” by Speedlin Gonzalez’s rainbow flag and he filed a complaint with the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct, saying that the flag meant that the judge couldn’t be impartial.

“I think a judge bringing in symbols of sexuality — regardless of what kind of sexuality — I think that has no place in the courtroom,” he told Texas Lawyer.

He said that he would have been just as offended by “a swastika or confederate flag,” effectively comparing being gay to being a white supremacist.

U.S: Man sexually assaulted lesbian, saying he’d “fix the gay”

USA

Salt Lake City police arrested a man they said sexually assaulted a lesbian and told her he would “fix the gay.”

Adam Quinn Atwood, 34, was arrested Wednesday on charges of object rape, forcible sodomy, kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault and forcible sexual abuse, according to jail records.

The case is being investigated as a hate crime, Det. Greg Wilking of the Salt Lake City Police Department told NBC News on Friday.

The woman, who told police she is gay, said she visited a friend in Salt Lake City on Sunday night and that at some point, the friend fell asleep. The woman said she continued talking with the friend’s husband, whom she identified as Atwood, and that he “began touching and grabbing her,” according to the police affidavit.

She said Atwood then sexually assaulted her, and when she said “no” and told him to stop, he allegedly asked “if she was sure she didn’t like it” and “if she was sure she was gay,” the affidavit states.

When she tried to leave, the woman said Atwood grabbed her by the back of the neck, forced her back into the house and took her to the basement where he choked her and again sexually assaulted her, according to the affidavit.

The woman said she kept telling Atwood that she doesn’t like men in an attempt to get him to stop and that he “told her he was going to fix the gay,” according to the affidavit.

Russia: Lesbian artist faces six years jail for creating innocent pictures

Yulja_Tsvetkova-ls-main-800x597

A lesbian artist has spent months under house arrest and is facing fines and six years jail, just for publishing innocent images in Russia.

Yulja Tsvetkova faces three separate trials. Under the first, Russia has charged her with ‘pornography’, with a penalty of up to six years in prison. Moreover, she also faces two trials for LGBT+ ‘propaganda’ – with a fine of 50 million rubles (€600 $625) for each one.

But despite all this, Tsvetkova told GSN that she would continue her artistic work and fight for LGBT+ people.

In the pornography case, Tsvetkova posted a drawing of a vagina in a social media page about body positivity. The page features many figurative and artistic images of vaginas. They wouldn’t look out of place in an art gallery and certainly aren’t pornographic.

In addition, the 26-year-old published articles on queer culture, supporting LGBT+ youth and discrimination for LGBT+ people in Russia on a social media group. That earned her one charge of distributing LGBT+ ‘propaganda’.

The other ‘propaganda’ charge came after Tsvetkova drew an illustration of a lesbian and gay couple with kids.

South Africa: Teen lesbian dead after being knifed 13 times in brutal attack

SA

As the country was celebrating Human Rights Day on Saturday, 16-year-old Liyabona Mabishi’s right to life was taken away.

The Grade 11 learner from Nkanini in Khayelitsha [South Africa] was slaughtered by three men who left her fighting for her life.

The teen lesbian was walking with her 18-year-old friend when she accidentally bumped into one of the men.

She apologised for knocking him but her words fell on deaf ears and she was stabbed 13 times.

Her friend, who tried to intervene, was also attacked.

U.S: Lesbian couple sues prison system for workplace discrimination

A lesbian couple who worked in the Michigan prison system for decades is suing the state, claiming prison officials failed to do anything to protect them from years of harassment and discrimination in the workplace.

The couple, the lawsuit claims, faced harassment, discrimination and retaliation daily for not fitting into the standard mold of a state prison employee – being a heterosexual white man.

“[Michelle] (Woods) has, on countless occasions, been referred to as a ‘dyke,’ … has been told that ‘Stanley Steamer has nothing on you,’ and has had a beaver and a taco put as the desktop background on her computer,” according to the lawsuit.

Woods would later be reprimanded for various violations she had no knowledge of committing, the lawsuit claims. She was spied on by a higher ranking officer and was denied consideration for a promotion by officials who said she needed to learn to “play the game,” the lawsuit alleges.

[Loretta] Smith, who also works for MDOC, claims she was demoted to working the midnight shift in retaliation for complaining about the hostile work environment.

Disney/Pixar’s ‘Onward’ Banned In Multiple Middle East Countries Due To Lesbian Reference

onward

Disney/Pixar’s family film Onward has been banned in multiple Middle East markets due to the film’s minor reference to a lesbian relationship.

[T]he reference hasn’t gone down well with censors in some countries, sources have confirmed. Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have all banned the film due to the reference. The film, released regionally this week, is nowhere to be seen on cinema schedules in those territories. Other Middle East markets such as Bahrain, Lebanon and Egypt are showing the film.

Russia, another territory with recent history for banning or censoring LGBT content, censored the Onward scene by changing the word “girlfriend” to “partner” and the local version avoids mentioning Specter’s gender.

U.S: Pastor puts up anti-homosexual sign on discovering neighbours are lesbian

anti-lgbt-sign

A Louisiana pastor found his church the subject of a peaceful demonstration protesting his decision to put up an anti-gay sign in his front yard that appeared to target his lesbian neighbors.

The protest was prompted by a Facebook post shared by Lynda Slimer of Benton, La., who said that she, her wife, and two daughters came home to find the sign in the yard of their neighbor, Rex Cornwell, the pastor of the Bossier Church of Christ.

The sign features the international ‘No’ symbol over the LGBTQ Pride flag with the words “God forbids homosexuality, so should we.” Bible verses condemning homosexuality appear at the bottom of the sign.

Slimer wrote on Facebook that she believes the yard sign was prompted by Cornwell’s realization that she and her wife are not roommates.

Australia: Pregnant lesbian told “I hope your baby dies”

L2LAustralia

A pregnant woman has been brought to tears after a stranger verbally abused her at a supermarket.

Ebony was shopping with her girlfriend Lisa at a Coles at Brookside in northern Brisbane, when a man approached her and told her he hoped her baby would die.

Lisa said she’s hesitant about Ebony returning to the supermarket on her own after the experience, the Courier-Mail reported.

‘She was just going about her day when a man she describes as being in his mid- 50s – completely unprovoked – told her ”I hope your baby dies, it’s better off without you”,’ Lisa said.

She said her girlfriend was left shocked to the point of tears, and the couple chose to leave immediately rather than responding to the man’s comments.

But the effects of the comments didn’t disappear for the couple, who say they have endured discrimination in the past for raising a child as two same-sex parents.

‘It affected us for a few days. It shook Ebony up a lot and caused unnecessary concern for the baby. I guess as an expectant mum, she was already filled with concern, so someone saying something like that plays on your worst fears,’ Lisa said.
