The principal at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Md. says a school investigation into the March 2017 assault by at least four male students on an 11th grade lesbian student, which resulted in the student suffering three broken ribs, has been unable to identify the attackers.

Lidia Reyes, the mother of the lesbian student, contacted the Washington Blade about the incident last month, saying the attack came after her daughter had been the target of bullying and harassment by fellow students. She said school officials weren’t taking adequate steps to address the problem.

Reyes said her daughter reported the attack occurred in the school auditorium on March 23, 2017. But Principal Elaine Carlene Murray told the Blade the auditorium was not open on that day and school security officials could not confirm exactly where the incident took place.

A federal high court in Abuja has dismissed a suit seeking to register a lesbian advocacy organization in Nigeria.
Lesbian activist Pamela Adie sued the Corporate Affairs Commission after her application to register her organization, Lesbian Equality and Empowerment Initiatives, was rejected on the grounds that the name was misleading, offensive, contrary to public policy and in violation of the Nigerian law prohibiting same-sex marriage.
The organization’s primary objective is to advocate for the rights of sexual minority women in Nigeria.

U.S: Social Security discriminated against lesbian after partner died, lawsuit says

A Washington woman whose lesbian partner died before same-sex marriage was legal in her state filed a lawsuit against the Social Security Administration on Tuesday for denying her benefits she would have been entitled to if they had been allowed to marry.

According to the lawsuit, Helen Thornton and Marge Brown were in a committed relationship from 1979 until 2006, when Brown died of cancer at age 50. The two women also have a son whom they raised since birth.

Despite being together for 27 years and raising a son together, the SSA denied Thornton survivor’s benefits on the grounds that they were not married before Brown died in 2006. However, the state of Washington didn’t allow same-sex marriage until 2012.

By withholding benefits, the lawsuit says, the federal government is discriminating against Thornton because of her sexual orientation.

U.S: Lesbians Harassed by Anti- Lesbian Neighbours Paint House Rainbow

Rainbow House

Married lesbians in Pennsylvania who say they’ve endured years of homophobic slurs from their neighbors are fighting back by painting their house the colors of the rainbow.
The women, Lisa Licata and Sherry Lau, who moved to their Penn Hills neighborhood five years ago, said that their neighbors Ron Makay and his wife, Iolanda Wieczorkowski, have repeatedly shouted “homos, dykes, and lesbians” at them. They allege that Makay shot their dog with a BB gun, which he has denied.
To put some distance between themselves and the antigay neighbors, Licata and Lau erected a fence that they painted the colors of the rainbow flag. The fence allegedly set the neighbors off so much that they amped up the harassment. That’s when the women decided to paint the side of their house that faces the neighbors in rainbow colors.
