Italy: Engaged lesbians face abuse, discrimination on college campus

L2L Italy

Two lesbians engaged to be married have said they are the victims of ongoing abuse and discrimination.

Known only as GB, 27, and LS, 21, the pair said they have no respite from ongoing taunts about their sexuality. They even face from some of their friends in group chats they belong to.

The pair study psychology and cultural mediation (the study using data to analyse the cultural difference between people) respectively. They are students at the University of Padua in the northern Italian region of Veneto. Both women live on campus in the Copernicus Residence.

‘When they came to tell us that our displays of affection were too noice, we laughed, then it degenerated and we realized that this was an attack on us, because we are lesbians,’ the pair told media.

Ireland: Lyra McKee, talented young, lesbian journalist killed at riot

lyra.jpg

Lyra McKee was killed on Thursday (local time) by a gunman shooting in the direction of police officers, shortly after she tweeted a photo of a police vehicle being pelted by petrol bombs, with the caption: “Derry tonight. Absolute madness.”

A year after moving to Londonderry, the celebrated young journalist had written about how she looked forward to “better times ahead and saying goodbye to bombs and bullets once and for all”.

But just three months later she was killed during a riot that underscored the challenges still faced by Northern Ireland, 21 years after the Good Friday Agreement largely ended decades of deadly sectarian bloodshed.

U.S: Lesbian Parents Of Toddler With Cancer Receive Lesbophobic Message

Tiffany and Albree Shaffer with their children (via Facebook)

The parents of a one-year-old girl diagnosed with advanced cancer were shocked to receive a hateful message on social media from a stranger.

“My prayers for Callie. I was going to donate $7600.00 to her fund, but I found out her parents are lesbian. I’ve chosen to donate to St. Jude due to that fact. Sorry. I’ll still pray for her though, but maybe it’s God’s way of getting your attention that she needs a mommy and a daddy, not two mommies.”

Australia: Lesbian women forced to pay fees to Royal Brunei Airlines after cancellation

Two lesbian women have hit out at travel group Flight Centre for asking them to pay hundreds in cancellation fees to Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA).
Shannon, 26, and Jaqueline, 28, from Australia booked the flights with RBA with a stopover in Brunei last month through Flight Centre. However, after learning about the implementation of Sharia Law – which would see gay and bisexual men stoned to death and queer women face public lashing – they cancelled.
Flight Centre agreed to waive the cancellation fees. The group informed the pair they still needed to pay a $300AUS ($213.42/€190.08) to Royal Brunei Airlines.

Older lesbians deserve recognition as feminist pioneers and sisters

by Claire Heuchan

Older lesbians have given so much to feminist and gay organizing that their erasure as the pioneers of both communities feels nothing short of criminal. And yet, much like mainstream society, so much of queer culture centers youth and masculinity that it is fundamentally unequipped to acknowledge the significance of older lesbians within the community.

The 11-Year-Old Who Wants To Be America’s First Lesbian President

ella.jpeg

Ella Briggs, an 11-year-old Connecticut resident, became her state’s first openly gay “kid governor” in January ― and she’s aiming to one day have national and even global impact.

She’s already so invested in public service, she said she would love to become America’s “first lesbian president”.

Still, the road to living authentically hasn’t been easy. Ella has said she was harassed at the public school she attended in East Hampton, Connecticut, after she first identified as a lesbian. In third and fourth grade, she said her classmates ostracized her and refused to sit next to her in class.

“I think they were just scared of me,” she told the Post. “They were afraid to touch me.”

When she told a substitute teacher that she identified as gay, Ella said, the teacher told her that subject wasn’t “school appropriate.”

“It really hurt my feelings,” she told the Courant. “I cried in the bathroom and I don’t want kids to feel like that because like I already didn’t feel like I fit in at that school.”

Indonesian university shuts down student news site over lesbian love story

Suaru USU newsroom (Photo: Provided)

University officials in Indonesia this month ordered a student news website shut down its entire operation after it published a fictional same-sex short story.
They could also face up to 12 years in prison under Indonesia’s draconian pornography law, which forbids anything with ‘salacious content or sexual exploitation that violate the moral values of society’.
The 18 student journalists at North Sumatra University (USU) were given just 48 hours to close the site and vacate the news room.
Publisher and author Yael Stefany Sinaga wrote the 1,000-word story about a woman expressing her love for another young woman.
Titled Everyone Refuses My Presence Near Her, it was published on March 12. The journalists also shared it on social media.

China: Lesbian families struggle under patriarchal legal framework

winky

Same-sex marriage is neither legal nor widely accepted in Chinese culture. Even though Shenzhen is seen as a liberal part of China, Xiao Chen and Winky face plenty of intolerance.
They want to send Phoebe and Sarah to day care, but they haven’t been able to obtain a “hukou” — household registration certificate — for the twins. The certificate, widely seen as outdated, determines a child’s access to education, healthcare and social benefits.
Without hukou, Phoebe and Sarah don’t legally exist in China.

Michelle King and Amanda Shelton are engaged and they wanted to learn how to dance for their upcoming wedding.
Shelton bought a Groupon for dance lessons at Dave Thompson’s Prestige Ballroom in Des Peres, Missouri.
But when they tried to redeem the Groupon, Thompson said that they couldn’t take lessons there because they’re a same-sex couple.
“We don’t have accommodations for same-sex couples to dance,” the women said Thompson said, adding that the straight people in the room would feel “awkward.”

AfterEllen’s Response to NBC OUT (Full Statement)

by Memoree Joelle
AfterEllen.com

“Lesbians should absolutely be “allowed” to have a mainstream publication. We should absolutely be allowed to discuss issues (documented and evidence-based realities) that lesbians are currently facing, as they specifically pertain to and affect lesbians.

Being an ally should not require lesbians to deny their own reality. It should not require lesbians to relinquish all autonomy, to believe exactly as others do, or fall silent.

This goes much deeper than a simple statement. There’s been an ongoing campaign of homophobia directed exclusively at lesbians, and when our writers try to cover these issues, as they specifically pertain to and affect lesbians, we’re shouted down by non-lesbians with slurs and anti-lesbian sentiment. Enough is enough.”

Especially not when bringing up a child.
It is immoral and wrong.

We suggest you move to a more appropriate area of the city.”

U.S: Tax preparer refuses to serve lesbian couple

tax.JPG

For four years, Bailey Brazzel says, she had employed the same tax preparer, Nancy Fivecoate of Carter Tax Service in Russiaville, Ind. Fivecoate prepared the taxes without issue each time — until this year, when Brazzel brought her new wife, Samantha.
Fivecoate declined to serve the couple, citing her religious beliefs.
This was the first year the Brazzels, who wed in July, were filing jointly as a married couple. According to Samantha, Fivecoate explained that she believed marriage was between a man and a woman and that she would therefore not be able to prepare their taxes.
